The ambient temperature is falling here, and travelling home tonight in the dark with the top down, I noticed I wasn't getting much heat from the heater, without the A/C atually switched on.

Plenty of heat through the aircon but once I push the 'Stop' button to kill the A/C compressor the heat would fall right off.

This can't be normal. All input appreciated.

That is very normal. You need to have the AC on to get the heater going. Despite what the manual says....

Actually you have to have the A/C button "out" to get the heat or A/C.

I do not believe the A/C compressor is functioning when the heat is on, but that's only speculation on my part.

I don't feel the resistance of the compressor once the heat starts, but I could be wrong.

It's a bit strange how this works!

If you think of it as a climate control instead of a heater and AC it makes perfect sense. You are turning on the climate control and it selects heat or cool depending on the termperature in the car.

    Bingo.

Since the intro of the TR Ferrari has not had heaters and A/C systems. They are climate control systems. It is integrated so that you choose the desired temp and the system will run heat or A/C as required to maintain the desired temp.

Correct, the "stop" button also kills the heater. That threw me the first time also on the 360. I don't believe the 355 was like that. I am pretty sure I used to keep my 355 in off, but still was able to get heat.

    Thanks guys, for the input.

    I get it now.

The car obviously doesn't have a heater water matrix, only the A/C condensor, which means that the compressor has to be running to get heat.

They saved a bit on the extra radiator and pipework.

Strange that I never noticed this before, and this is my second 360.

That's a peculiar setup. I wonder how many other high end cars follow that plan.

The Porsche certainly doesn't. Full heat available with the A/C off.

No ! I got it all wrong.

It does have a hot water system up front, between the condensor and a heater evaporator, and it's own electrical pump,..............

that's why the A/C has to be on.......to get heat..............it's as clear as mud, isn't it?

Anyone throw any light on this?

In the owner's manual, and workshop manual, it describes the Push/Stop button for the A/C thus:-

    “ Pressed (Stop)
The air conditioning is turned off.
The heating is still enabled though, and will function according to the temperature set .“

Can anyone get heat with the A/C compressor off?

Is this one more incident where the books are crazy !

Yes, it's one more incident where the manual gives incorrect info.

In the summer I pressed the stop button to just bring in air through the free flow vent system.

For either the heat or A/C that button has to be out, and as Rifledriver says the system then determines the requirement of heat or A/C.
