Anyone experience any trouble with the oil filters on their F430s...? Apparently, when being put back on, they need to be torqued a certain way with a certain instrument... Is that true...? Can anyone expound on that...?

Are you, therefore, looking for a new "twist" on this situation?

No different than any other late model motor from Ferrari. 12's had a great deal of trouble with it. On those for the first time ever Ferrari supplied a socket to all dealers and a torque spec because so many blew seals out.

You refer to it as a problem. It is like many other things on these cars. If it is done their way it is not a problem.

True. I have a friend who blew a 430 motor when the oil filter backed off, immediately lost oil , and then blew a rod through the side. He was losing oil and called dealer service some distance away who sent him two qts and told him to tighten the filter. He did as directed and it happened after that. He later was told he needed a special tool and some special technique to tighten it. He finnaly got a hold of the service bulletin which explained it all but was not told of it beforehand and now has a $80K dispute with FNA for a new motor. I am trying to get a copy of the Service Bulletin but you may be able to get it faster. If so, pls post.

I cannot understand why owners do not use the dealer or a knowledgeable Ferrari service center to service their $200,000+ cars. These are very sophisticated high perf. cars which require considerable knowledge and appropriate tools to correctly service.

I agree, the problem sometimes is finding one. I spent many years in the dealer network and to the end it still surprised me the percentage who just blew off Ferrari procedures because they knew better or never bothered to pay any attention to service info or bulletins.

It still amazes me how many owners think "It's just an oil change".

The other day the owner/ mechanic of a good local Mercedes shop came over to ask where the oil drain plug on a 355 was. I showed him on one on the rack. he asked "why 2 plugs" I told him it was a dry sump. He had never heard of that before. But hey, the owner probably saved $20 or $30 so it was all worth it.

The last Ferrari dealership that changed my oil stripped the threads on the oil drain plug. If I didn't have Brain Crall to do my oil changes, I'd definitely be doing it myself.

I agree, any dealer/service center is only as good as its worsed mechanic.
I've seen 360 come from dealers with only the main oil plug drained, but 10qrts of oil added, guess what that causes, and independent techs that have put the oil filter on so tight it breaks the theads out, and the oil filter snaps off while driving. I wont go into how long it took to clean up that mess and smell. talk to the mechanic, you will know in 2 minutes if he is an idiot or a good tech.

If a dealer or service center makes a mistake, at least you are protected. Do it yourself and you own the mistake.:(

Change oil filters all day long in a Ferrari shop, and it'd all become clear. Hill Engineering doesn't produce items with a specific price-point in mind; they design and manufacture to a level of quality and performance.
