Interior Redo Time

    Well with the Concourse around the corner and the On-line Vs getting under way I thought I'd cheat a bit :D the interior was getting tired and needed to be redone. I opted to do a complete strip, yep I have gutted the Italian beauty! one of the PO's had the leather re-sprayed and the job wasn't good, over spray everywhere and runs, so thick in spots it was cracking.

    I stripped the 'paint' off with acetone and redyed all the panels and pieces, took me 2 days. the black vinyl was also treated to a re-dye to make the black black again. the center console was dissembled and the trim parts where striped and re-done, plastic cleaned and polished and the climate control was also pulled apart and re-furbished. no screw left unturned! even the bezels on the radio faceplate and the speakers were redone black as the silver looked hokey to me.

    the carpet is being custom fitted and I went with Wilton wool - Black! that'll go in next week. I think the black/saddle will be a nice POP!

    interesting thing though, in stripping the dye the two front seats have vat dyed leather along with some odd trim parts, the rest is surface dyed. I had the dye matched to the front seats as the seats are in excelent condition and the vat dye look is 1000 times better then the surface treatment. and the seats will wear ALOT better than the re-dye.

    Looks great. Do you have any "before" photos for comparison? I am always wondering when you rejuvinate with Leatherique, and when you strip and re-dye.

    nothing that really shows the interior well. i just decided to do it and didn't think to take pics before starting, by the time I thought of it the stuff was stripped. I could have gone with the leatherique process but couldn't get anyone to call me back. my upholstery guy told me about the stuff they use and it was local so I used that. the leather in my mondial is in great condition, not dried out or cracking so it wasn't a lengthy process.

    The problem with all 'spray-on' dyes (like Leatherique) is that once it's been done the stitching is pretty much stained forever, so you can never get it back to original. The two restoration shops I've talked to (one of which does Nick Cage's cars) had very negative things to say about the surface-applied products: not durable, don't allow the leather to breathe, don't preserve the grain of the leather, etc.

    I'm glad to hear your upholstery guy had an alternative recommendation and I think you're wise to go with that. Looks like you're being thorough in the disassembly process, so hopefully it turns out a lot better.

    My car's being prepared for Concorso, and the interior needed the most attention. When the work is done I'll share photos in another thread with my usual concise 6,000-word narrative... ;)
