Yeah.... its old news but so far I have only heard/seen it via dealer memos not in a public statement such as this one I just received from FNA today.

It says that if you use an after market exhaust you can kiss your warranty , and other things, goodbye.

So what do you think? Seeing as they are claiming that all the brands named are actually causing harm to the cars... what has/will be the reaction by Tubi, Borla,Cap and others?

Do you think this it is because these after market suppliers don't pay an extortion fee and are gonna be forced to take a walk with the fishes? lol

    http://www.newsferrari.com/experience13-8.htmlTubi Or Not Tubi?

What child has not dreamed of racing a fast car while making motor sounds with moist lips and heaving lungs? Buying a Ferrari fully satisfies that dream but many yearn for more roar. Aftermarket exhaust systems from manufacturers such as those from Tubi, Capristo, Borla and others promise added ear joy. But do these pipes risk a shift from "cruise" to "bruise?" Can these radical pipes harm our ponies?

The answer is yes, but why? A Ferrari exhaust system is much more than a pipe with audio resonance. These systems are the result of thousands of hours of careful research, design, balancing and testing. Air pressure within the pipes has a significant effect on how fuel is burned, how power is produced and overall reliability.

For instance, when a cylinder detonates fuel, an explosive pulse is pushed through the exhaust. The speed of the pulse determines your engine's high-end and low-end torque. The speed also determines the so-called "scavenging effect" which affects horsepower and torque by maximizing fuel burn efficiency.

Any change in the volume and dimensions of a factory exhaust system may affect horsepower and torque. However, these changes may be accompanied by undesirable consequences.

Ferrari introduced a revolutionary modular exhaust in 1999 on the 360 Modena and employed it on all models thereafter. This exhaust features an ingenious valve, controlled by the engine's ECU computer. The valve modifies the volume of air in the pipes as part of a complex combustion formula that varies in response to the driver's demands.

A Ferrari ECU, responding to the pressures in an aftermarket exhaust, will try to compensate for the altered parameters, but eventually it will not be able to manage effectively. The only way the engine can respond is to illuminate the check-engine-light. However, this may not occur immediately. Engine damage may result before the owner is aware of the problem. Consequently, the installation of aftermarket exhaust systems will void the manufacturer's warranty and any POWER coverage programs.

For more information on POWER, Ferrari's extended protection program, contact your local authorized Ferrari dealer or the Ferrari Concierge Call Center at 1-866-551-2828.

I'm sure they would figure it out by the type of engine damage, and also the appearance of the replaced exahust hardware when the car was examined.

Unfortunately for Tubi/Borla/et al, it limits their market to the old low-tech segment - pre 360, if I'm reading their release correctly.

I question why Ferrari wouldn't take part ownership in Tubi, for example, as an additional revenue stream, and then work with them directly.

Customizing any car is completely personal.

I don't think I will be able to leave any car I ever own alone.

IMO, it would be better if companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini, worked together with all exhaust companies. Aftermarket companies only exist because of us, the consumers. We want a louder/quieter exhaust, more power, different tips, or a little of everything. If they weren't popular, then the aftermarket wouldn't be a billion dollar business.

Car manufacturers need to quit fighting the popularity of what consumers want, and actually work together with each other. Look at GM and Ford (maybe Dodge does it too), they now offer their trucks with lower/lift kits with full factory warranties. Not only do they make more money, they are giving the customer exactly what they want when they drive off the lot.

Maybe some of this is true, but I think it's more hocus pocus bull**** than anything else.

I would sure love to see that one in court! I would give it about 12 seconds before being tossed. They know it too, but use these "press releases" to bludgeon their dealers and customers. Must be nice.

Whats next? Are they going to void warranty repair due to after market wiper blades and the aerodynamic down force that they create thus stressing the transmission and ultimately leading to total failure? lol lol

Im not saying Ferrari does not have a valid point... but it just has an undertone that there is a history of animosity between Ferrari and after market suppliers who "Profit" off their product.

i think they are trying to scare Ferrari owners to keep their car's stock.Dealerships have to prove that the after market exhaust caused the damage.

Ferrari are getting under my skin with this whole "we wear ties when we do 200" BS.

If I want to put an aftermarket exhaust on my Ferrari, I don't understand why it should "void" a warrenty? How does this damage the company?

Although... Have Ferrari engines and components not been able to handle this aftermarket equipment?
If the products have become a liability - causing more problems than not - I think I could understand it. Are they loosing money from all the repairs?

Maybe Ferrari is going to come out with a factory aftermarket system "for off-road use only" ;) that will not void the warranty.

I will be making rounds to a few of the SOCAL Ferrari dealers this week. I'll ask if they have any junk Tubi's they want to trade for stock exhausts :).

I'm trying to see Ferrari's point of view on this. Let's say you put a real p.o.s. aftermarket exhaust on the car, which created all sorts of back pressure problems and did somehow damage the engine. (If tolerances are close -- and we know Ferrari is on the extreme end of the performance spectrum for cars -- then maybe there is more potential for damage.) Should Ferrari have to pay to fix it? That's the real issue.

I think if we were talking about radical aftermarket camshafts, most of us would agree with Ferrari that that kind of modification could void the warranty, so there is precedent for this. An exhaust system is obviously much easier to swap, but if Ferrari has real proof that it's causing damage, then who knows.

I don't see how Ferrari benefits from speaking out against Tubi, Borla, et al. How many stock exhausts actually wear out on Ferraris, given the amount of snow/salted road driving these cars do? Why would they care about killing the aftermarket exhaust industry?

I would be interested to know if Porsche has a similar policy.

Again, two words: Control Freaks. They want to control the entire process of owning an F-car. This strategy backfires as competitors whom are more flexible will win over customers. It's already and has been happening for some time.

If there are engine management systems that control back pressure to the engine (IE lessen when required through release) then there could be and likely is legitimacy to their claims. I've seen this in other equipment where there is a "wastegait" that relieves engine pressure in turbo charged engines. Different set up but same principle... When the wastegaits failed and were unable to relieve the pressure, they increased head pressure causing cylinder head gasket failures and other undesirable results. It was interesting to see torn down cylinder heads where you could see fretting caused by head chatter as bolts were eventually stressed by the cycles that the engines went through in an overpressure state.

There may be legitimacy to the claim...they did not discuss negative effects on old low tech toys like 308's. Or they may just be control freaks.

Why is that? It's not that big of deal to swap exhausts if the need arose. Depending on the model, maybe a few hours. Sure is worth it if there is a major issue at hand.

Furthermore, any aftermarket exhaust maybe will add at most a few ponies and a few pound feet of torque. As long as the upper exhaust (headers, cats, etc) remains untouched it will not effect A/F ratio more then a few percent at most and hurt the engine no matter what they say.

They probably plan to market their own sports exhaust and want 100% of the newer market on them!

How could a more open freer flowing exhaust cause a problem?
