Wouldn't we all like to have a 275 GTB? How about a rusty roof cut off a 275 GTB? Honolulu Iron Works was a huge old building that, at one time, was a machine shop that did repairs on ships calling at Honolulu and on machinery that was used in the sugar cane and pineapple industries. I think that it was built in the late 1800's. I do remember that the beams inside the giant buildings were still assembled with rivets. The big machine works closed and the buildings were sub-divided into smaller pieces where many small businesses took root. I remember seeing a small body shop that had a 275 GTB that they were in the process of making into a NART Spider re-creation. Even then, before I knew much about the world of Ferrari, I thought it was a strange place to be doing this kind of work to such an exotic car.

A while ago, a friend of mine told me that he was at the site of the Iron Works when it was being prepped for demolition to make way for the new Federal Building. He saw the 275 roof leaning against the building and the gentleman working there said to take it, if he wanted it. It was going to be put into the dumpster. My friend stashed it in his garage, but he was selling the house and he asked me if I wanted it. I couldn't stand the thought of it being thrown away, so my "work truck" was pressed into service and now it resides with all the other useless junk that I treasure.

J**** f'ing Cri** that Alfa is rusty. I thought I was restoring the rustiest Alfa in the world, I now know I am wrong!

I would have kept the roof too, but it's time to get the welder out for the Alfa ;)

The roof will make a nice hard-top for one of the cut cars. It stood the test of time better than the Alfa.

Was it a short nose? Six (6) Webers, or just three? ;)

That Alfa looks like it came from Detroit! Is the overall salt atmosphere that bad on the islands, or is it just that bad along the coast?

hang it on a wall and put a flat screen tv inside the rear window cutout(makes a great excuse for a new flat screen in the garage anyways) :)

    Hi Pete

Yes, the Alfa is a bit rusty. Sad, but true, that is the "good side". I do think that it is too far gone to be saved, at least at any reasonable cost. The great thing is that the car has been utterly reliable, I can use it to haul stuff around, and I never worry about leaving it in a parking lot.

I never thought that the salt air was a real problem here on the south side of the island. It is a serious problem on the north shore where the prevailing winds carry the salt onshore. The big problem for this poor Alfa is that its owner never takes care of it. All he does is wring mileage out of it.

I saw the 275 many years ago. At the time, I wouldn't have known enough to make any notes of the details of the car. I do remember that is had three carbs. The car was sold to the mainland as a project before it was finished. I think that the body shop and owner realised that they were in over their heads.

I do think the roof is cool. It will get a quick clean up and some paint to prevent further rusting. For the time being, it will be art hanging on the wall in the shop.

Not likely for the blue car in the link. That car has an alloy body. The roof section pictured above is steel. (rusty) Alloy bodied 275GTB's had a long rain gutter, almost to the rear window IIRC.
The only way this roof was for that car would be if someone completely rebodied it in alloy.

Good point. Although, to turn a Shortnose into a NART Spyder lookalike would probably require re-paneling everything but the doors.

I also saw a red Shortnose turned into convertible a few years ago. Do not know the chassis but last I saw it was in Europe.

I believe he means when your Alfa has finally crumbled into the ground, that it's mag wheels would be worth something. Those mag wheels are rare and sort after.

Thanks Pete. A fair number of Aussies make it to Hawaii and I thought I was pretty good at knowing the colorful expressions that they have a talent for. Phuck.em strewth was totally new and unknown to me. I tried working with PH*** as a phonetic cleansing of a word we all know, but still couldn't fathom the meaning. ;>)

G,day,Hawaii. There are actually 2 proper words:the first you,ve nailed, the next(um not em) is used to create hesitation before proceeding to the next word which is one of Aussies' most used, generally in an amazed, frustrated, annoyed, surprised situation. This particular situation is probably the first and fourth of those,it can be used for the whole lot if the situation demands.Hope this clears any problem you septic tanks have with the Queens English.Cheers,Simon.

Here, we'd chop the roof to bits, weld it into the Alfa, spray a new paint coat and mount Goodyears on the rims.....
there you've saved all the heritage in one neat spot!

    Hilarious thread........

Heck, you can still rebuild the 275GTB from the chrome strip alone, you're golden.....
