The engine sound insulation on my 1988.5 TR has broken down over the years and needs replacement. The part alone is nearly $800 for what appears to be a foam material and some backing. I don't want to damage my car, but I also don't want to waste money on something that can be fixed/repaired for a more reasonable cost.

Questions: Will I do any damage to the car (paint/etc) if I leave it as is - partly broken. Is there any heat damage that may cause paint issues if the rear area above the engine doesn't have the protection of the sound insulation? Is there a less expensive alternative to a $800 part and 2-3 hours of labor to put it in?

    Thanks in advance

I'd remove it totally. No damage as my car (and others) never came with it. This has been discussed here recently. Search is your friend. :)

I have the same problem on my 512 TR as many others have had the same problem. I have been looking on the internet for a type replacement material but I have been unsuccessful. My dealer told me it could be replaced at a rediculous cost of $1500. Rutlands said it is not available at all. I would like to find a replacement option rather than just removal.

We had a similar therad here some weeks ago...

Get some nice insulating rubber (1 cm thick) at a heater-store, cut it exactly in the right form and stick it in its place !

I got a piece of rubberfoam, normally used against condensation for free from a local aircobuilder....!

Name on the back says: K-FI EX ST (FM approved)

Got out the old crinkling isolation.... and used this to draw 2 new ones...

Got the elctric knive from the kitchen.... nothing better...!

And applied Bison glue.....stuck the new isolation part perfectly in the back !

It took me half an hour and this is how it looks.... Anybody can do this !!
