A buddy of mine was in the jury for this scumbag in Virginia. Byron Keith Brown who was involved in a ponzi scheme. He collected a bunch of cars real quick. He got a 15 year sentence.

Here is the list of cars up for auction

Do you need a dealer license for the government auctions?

You do not need a dealer license to purchase from a govt auction. They are open to the public. However, you would need to register to bid prior to the sale starting. There will be dealers there bidding along with a ton of regular joes, so the prices will most likely exceed normal aucton prices. The risks associated with buying essentially as-is vehicles does not outweigh the dollars saved IMHO.

Looks like some white-collar crook got what he deserved and now his small car collection is up for auction in Ellicott City, might be a good time to get something at a bargain price. Most of the cars look to be in good condition despite some poor wheel selections.

Anyhow, autoblog is to credit for the heads up:

Baltimore Sun reports that the 360 Spider went for $100K. Not much of a bargain. Murci went for $210.

Anyone have access to auction results to see the rest? I can not get to results on the Manheim site.

Brendan - did you get that Beetle?

Manhiem Baltimore has its regular Tuesday sales, and many vehicles sold. It was hard and pull every single car, and I assumed you guys didn't really care for the other regular cars like the S, or Range rover etc... I pulled out the majors for you, if anyone is really interested I can pull the other cars as well. I had missed the Auburn, and per your request is also the Beetle lol.

    1936 AUBURN SPEEDSTER WHITE 2 4 GAS A 4X2 CD CV L 7,756 $51,000
    2005 VW BEETLE GLS 2.0L CV RED 2 4 GAS A 4X2 Y CD CV L 37,395 $10,800

Doesn't look like there were any major bargains in those cars.
Why is it most auctions like this end up bidding the cars up to almost retail prices?

An old saying I heard about auctions is "the only person in the room that doesn't think the final bid was over-priced is the final bidder".

A good percentage of high end vehicles sold at auction have buyers already lined up. The dealer/wholesaler buys it, tacks on a few grand and cuts it loose. Percentage wise, there is MUCH more of a wholesale-retail gap on cheaper cars.

Treasury does this on Purpose. They hold it at very busy Auctions such as Manhiem on their HighLine Days, so the cars get the maximum amount of attention and receive high price. This way, when the collection is received, they can distribute it to the victims so they receive the most amount of money.

These cars, or any cars, are treated as normal Inventory at Manhiem. On Tuesdays, there is already thousands of dealers ready to buy cars, so these extra cars come in as extra inventory. None of the public people bought anything, it was simply all the dealers around the USA bidding them up and snatching them.

The only Public I'd suggest regular people go, is places where it's not being held at Manhiem, or Adesa. The less people bidding, the better the results. I'm glad the prices bid high, now the victims will receive more on their dollar. BTW, no one wants to buy a Fu*ked carfax Exotic. All these cars have Reposed Titles and Carfaxes now. So even if you got them at a bargain, you'd never be able to sell them.
