My 348 is back home after the major service. I am very happy with the final result ! I prepared my self for this event for a very long time, did a lot of research and took a week off from work to help my mechanic friend to do the job. Let me tell you what an experience has been. At one point, (me paranoid and my friend laughing at me all the time) I thought we couldn't make it and miserably failed. Well, I was very happy to be completely wrong !
A few hiccups during the major ... we decided to leave the AC compressor connected to the line to avoid recharge and taking the chance it wouldn't work as good as it had in the past. This option slowed us down a lot, many parts have to come off to make space during the engine out procedure. I wouldn't go for it if I had to re-do it again. Another mistake we made was to forget to install the left back timing belt cover and had to take the belt/tensioner down again to install it. Very interesting experience for me was the valve adjustment procedure and the following leak down test (luckily within the range). Last scare was the coolant leak experience after starting up the car, thinking was in the new water pump/thermostat but instead a new hose right by not properly tied up ... yes, that was my fault. Anyway ... all good ! Below are some pics of the job.

How did you make out getting that air-con unit out of the way? Pretty tight isn't it?

That was really bad, we had to take out the top support and the big oil hose to the radiator, then squeeze thru the side when the car was going up. A real pain ....

Nobody asked ... what about the belt / tensioners / water pump condition ? They all looked in tip top shape if you ask my 65 year old, 45 years experience mechanic friend, I know, I know, the service had to be done for the sake of the Ferrari God ....

    Funny you mention it.............

Just the other day an Aussie Fchatter told me he replaces the cam belts every 10 yrs in his 308 and only JUST changed the tensioners the same time he put new belts in last week. :):)

The tensioners were orginal, 26 yrs old. He left the waterpump in there, 26 yrs old. :D:D

I assumed the tensioners finally became noisey and he said nope, they were still fine. I asked why replace them then and he replied he thought it was time as he didnt think they would have lasted another 10 yrs when the next cam belt change is done. 36 yr old tensioners, crikey!:eek:

His 308 GTS was bought new by his Dad, still in the family and has 24,000 miles on it now. :):)

Great Job. I left my AC on there too, makes it pretty tough. My thumbnail just grew out after getting it stuck between the cam pulleys back in January! Feels good to accomplish it yourself though.

Glenn, order the Ricambi kit from Daniel. Hill bearings are the only way to go, bro.

Replace those crappy black plastic timing belt shrouds with the aluminum set found on earlier models. IIRC, you may have already collected those(?). Hope so. I hear they're almost impossible to find.
