From time to time there have been speculative threads about the cost of operating vintage cars. Today, while filing the latest work order, I thought it would be fun[I already know I have a warped sense of humor, no need for everyone to chime in] to add up the repair costs for the ten years I have owned my Daytona. This is repairs and maintenance only, does not include insurance, fuel, tires, registration, taxes, etc. I have had no big issues-well, unless you want to count the dropped exhaust valve. $169,500. Driven 42,500 miles since 2001 when I bought it, so not even $4.00 per mile. It is my favorite car. Malcolm Image Unavailable, Please Login
You've spent over $160,000 on MAINTENANCE & REPAIR COSTS in TEN YEARS and you think this is GOOD?!?!?? Holy crap....I'm confused
there are always issues, but the bad valve assuming you went for a rebuild around 50 k would put the costs back in line. after a year and 6000 miles, mine are around a dollar a mile and many smiles......
Of course, the price is skewed because none of the rebuild costs are amortized yet. If maintenence and mileage stays at the same rate, but the $50k engine rebuild doesnt happen again in the next ten years, then the cost per mile would be reduced to $3.45. When I have time I will add in operating and capital costs to project the total. I will need a scotch to do that. Off to Monterey Sunday, driving it up the coast, see you all there. Ohhh, and Blampee, as has been said many times, we need a "sarcasm" symbol. Malcolm Still, this isnt TOO far off my other Ferraris, even the new ones seem to use up between $3 and $5 dollars per mile, all in.
malcomb, i have seen your car on the road before...some years ago traveling south on the 805...in a see of mundane wind tunnel designed cars...this one stood out for all the right reasons!! that said, 40k plus miles for 160k ish is very pricey and would fly in the face of all the folks that say these cars must be driven. i hate to imagine how much it would cost to have this car as a garage queen? she is a pretty car on the road however!! pcb
Wow. Just think, for the cost of maintaining this thing, you could have owned and driven 172,341 new Trabants. Just a little perspective
Without wishing to start a fight, I suspect most of those who say"Ferraris are meant to be driven" don't drive theirs much, really. I think they mean that they take it out every other weekend for a 50 mile spin. Of course those who race are in an entirely different league. This car has been twice to New Orleans for the FFQClassic, driven there and back, to Montana for the Going to the Sun rally, to Texas for the Texas 1000, to Rolland's for BBQ, and to the Mountain Mille. I just love to be on the road in it. It is well cared for, but by any standards this is expensive to operate, for a street car. I know, Iknow, all of you with airplanes dont need to pile on-we know! It will be on Ocean avenue on Tuesday, stop by to say hello Malcolm
I don't have thelong-time experience you have in vintage Ferraris, Malcolm. But as 2nd opinion, my costs for the 330GTC in the past 2 years have been about 20,000. I'm expecting less in the next 2 years, because some of the things I needed to have done rarely crop up. I started with a "perfect" car (no such thing), and to drive the 15,000kms all over Europe that I did and still have a perfect car that was the cost. So that is around $3/mile. Onno
If I were in Southern California now, for sure I would stop by to introduce myself, say hello, and congratulate you for your beautiful relationship with your Daytona. Not many can claim that. w/ smiles Jimmy
Massive respect to you for that. I thought my Dad's 15000 miles in one of his GTC4's since 2006 would take some beating for miles travelled in a classic Ferrari in recent years.
I think you're right. And, your yellow Daytona is one of my all-time favorite cars also (saw it at Spanish Landing Park at the FOC show).
As another perspective: You can have just as much fun with aircraft as Ferrari's. Here are some examples that make the Daytona look " cheap". Hawker 125-700 1,000 nm mission : direct cost $6,805.02, fuel expense $4,394.76, maintenance labor per flight hour $344.79,parts expense $351.55, total 1,000 mile trip cost $ 12,494.00 Gulfstream V 1,000 nm mission direct cost $7,811.37, fuel expense $5,200.68,maintenance labor per flight hour$349.27, parts expense $307.92, total 1,000 mile trip cost $14,103.00 Ferrari Daytona 1,000 nm mission direct cost fuel expense @12 miles per gal? x $4.25 gal = $352.75, 1 qt oil = $10.00 ?, Malcolm's maintenance cost $3,990.00. total trip cost $4,361.00 So you have to ask yourself, which is more fun, or which method of pain do I prefer? Just a thought. Gary Bobileff
Malcom I love this thread. I am so sick of people saying about a car they see a few pictures of (usually on Fchat), "just spend a few thousands on getting this car up to speed on maintenance and it won't be expensive to run." Yessh! I've put 25,000 miles on my 330gt in the past 10 years and about 3 of those years it's been off the road to rebuild something. Over all it's averaged about $6000 a year and that includes the years I didn't drive it. If you actually drive somewhere in these cars as opposed to driving 10 miles around your neighborhood it will have needs, expensive needs. By the way I had some valve issues after 25,000 miles and I know two other owners who have had valve issues with much less milage. In all three of these cases stainless steel valves were perhaps not the way to go.
See, I knew the airplane crowd couldnt resist! Gary, get back to work on the 350-no more FC today. Workworkwork. Malcolm
Good job, Malcolm. Your car is almost irreplaceable. How many other Daytona owners know their car's long term history that well? You could have, alternatively, bought a new 456M for more money at the same point in time. Or even a 612 a bit later, for a LOT more money. You chose well, and are far ahead both in terms of finance and of experience.
Mine's been in the family since 1974 when it was a year old (as was I). My Dad used it as his every day car for three years and racked up 30,000 miles in that time. It's lead a quieter life since then but still gets used regularly.
Malcolm, I find this interesting that you prefer the Daytona over the 275. I know it is a bit off topic, but could you expound on this? How does the 275 drive in comparison? Is your lean because the Daytona is more comfortable for the long excursions? From your list of trips it seems the car has had most of the miles traversing the country. Well done. The Daytona is a happy car on the open roads.
I also prefer my Daytona over my 275 for driving. The 275 is just.. Well i have to say this, with our ramification. 365 faster, its the power the 275 is missing. Both feel the same, but the 365 has the extra's the 275 is missing. Plus the 275 seats are quite comfortable. I could elaborate more, but i don't want to hi jack this thread.. Dave
I salute Malcomb for driving the car. Amanda just broke her windshield the DAY before moving to school....(new car, Saturn Sky) "Well, baby, you call my friends over at Binswanger, and go FIX it.." She's crying, upset now, but that's just how life works. You drive them, you have to fix them.....
i am sure it was more than one ......!!! ( unless the repair shop was shady ---) hummmm any of those shops still exist ??
Dumb question I guess...never mind. You see why all I change is tires and oil!! And sparking plugs.....
