I'm seriously considering driving one of my F-Cars from Oregon to Lake Tahoe at the end of June for a friend's bachelor party. If I run into trouble are there any local resources, especially for carb cars?

If I wimp out, I'll go down I-5. If things are going well, I may cut over and go down 139 through Alturas, and then down 395. Anyone driven those roads?

If you end up taking I-5 to I-80 before you turn east, this shop is just off I-80.

Ben took fine care of my cars (Ferrari, Porsche, and BMW) from 1992 until 2000 when I returned to Arizona.
He is exceptionally meticulous and was with Ferrari of Sacramento until they closed around 1989. He then opened up his own shop just outside Sacramento.

If you get as far as Reno ;--) Intrepid Motors/Bert Skidmore is your best bet. Reno is only 45 minutes from the Northshore....
He took good care of our GTC; looks after Rob Waltons vintage racers, etc.

However you go, you'll have fun on some great roads!

Thanks! I am leaning toward taking the 365 2+2... it's been pretty reliable over the past 10 years, so I'm not too worried, but it pays to be prepared!

Sorry for the change in subject, but I thought Rob Walton's vintage cars were cared for here in Phoenix by Grand Touring Cars (Harley Cluxton's shop). That said, maybe Walton needs multiple shops to care for his fleet!

Any thoughts on the roads going north?

I am thinking about going home by way of 395 up to around Alturas, and then 139 to Klamath Falls.

Maybe I will ask that question in the Northern California section as well.

I have a couple of clients from the Klamath area that bring their cars to me In the SF area so I doubt there is anyone around there. That whole part of CA, OR, NV is kind of exotic no mans land.

To bad, there are some great roads around there.

    Don,

The only shop in Reno that I would consider is Intrepid Motorcar Co. I have never had them work on my Ferraris, but several of my friends have used them. There is no other Ferrari shops or mechanics that I know of in Reno/Tahoe.

PM me with the dates for your Tahoe trip. I am usually at my Tahoe home every weekend in the summer.

Thanks! Now that I have all that info, I am sure I won't need it!

Any thoughts on the roads going north out of Reno, 395 and 139 up to Klamath Falls (I realize that the only Ferrari mechanic up that way will be me!)?

It looks on the map like it might be a good area to drive the car the way Enzo intended.

The road from Tahoe to Sacramento is fun, best to do it at low traffic but the Cops hide on on ramps & shoot you w radar from behind

I once made it from Tahoe to SF in 2hours 15 minutes in my Countach at Midnight :) I stopped 5 times for gas but averaged near 100 mph, saw 140 + a few times

Thanks for that advice. From my atlas, it looks like I could take 395 up to Susanville and 139 to Klamath Falls.

Alternatively, it looks like I could take 395 all the way up to Alturas, and then cut over to 139. 139 north of Susanville looks pretty remote, for northern California at least!

Hi Don. Just bought a n 87TR and live in Klamath Falls. As Rifeldriver said, its a nomans land and absolutely no F car svc. I go to back and forth to Tahoe lots during the summer. The drive between here and Alturas is great. No traffic or trucks if traveled early Sunday AM. Breakfast at the Black Bear. On down toward Susanville is another great drive. All high desert and not much traffic. After you drop down off the hills and head west toward Susanville heads up for Standish...make a left on A-3 just before the gas station. This short cut saves 15 mi and keeps you out of Susanville traffic. Left at 395 and the rest of the drive is boring until you start up to Truckee. Have fun. ss

    Thanks for the info!

I am thinking of trying to stay at the new Jeld-Wen resort just outside of K-Falls. Any other hotel recommendations for a quick 1-night stopover?

donv, the A roads around Susanville are good roads, scenic and less traffic/patrolled than 395/Susanville. Longer but more enjoyable IMO. Also found another possible Ferrari mechanic option, try Kim Messer at 775-825-2850. Spoke with him, very impressed.

I just got back from the trip-- wow, what a great drive!

Sunday afternoon, from Reno to Klamath Falls was everything I could ask for. Beautiful views, and then during the long, boring, straight sections, clear roads!

The old 365GT made it with no hiccups at all-- had to add a bit of oil, but that's it.

    Thanks for the advice!
