I just purchased a set of new TRX's for my Boxer and looked at the date on the tires. They were produced in 1997!! Almost ten years ago. What do you guys think? Coker says thats all they have. Any other sources for those in the US?

Send them back. Lots of money for old tires. I know you asked for a source in the US but Longstone Tyre in the UK should have more recent stock.

But even the guys at Coker say you shouldn't use a tire that's more than seven years old.

How can they ship an almost ten year old tire and think that's safe?

In January 2005 I was looking for TRX tires. Tire Rack said they had a fresh shipment November 2004.

Ya but for what fitment? I got new rear TRX's for my TR earlier this year and they were made in late 04. With Boxers being less in number, Coker doesn't have the same demand for those tires that they would for other cars calling for the TRX. Hence the likelyhood they would have older tires in the size required for the Boxer.

BTW I picked up a set of TRX GT's(basic TRX's are not currently available even at Coker) for the front of the TR at Onlinetires.com for a whopping $328 less than Coker is demanding for the same set. :)

The tires in question are actually a Testarossa metric size.

You might want to check that as the TR needs 240/45/415 for the front and 280/45/415 for the ass end. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the Boxers need 55 series tires. Not sure of the diameters or widths. My rears were from Coker dated 4504.

I keep reading negative things about TRX's here, weak performance compared to newer tires. I've never had them before, obviously.

But you could switch to a different wheel and get a lower profile, more modern tire. I met a lady from TX with a Boxer with some very nice aftermarket wheels and new rubber:

Interesting... I just bought a set of XWX for the Dino from Coker. Oldest tire was made 2003... almost 3 years old... Jerry would not take them back. Told me they were fine.

I was not impressed especially after he listed the tire dates of his XWXs on this forum with the oldest being a late 04 as I recall..

I should have gone with Longstontyres.

I want to use the 280/45/415's on the rear. Those are what I purchased from Coker. They are actually a TR tire size. Some of the Boxer guys like them since they are a little wider in the rear. I thought I would put them on my spare wheels. They are fom early 1997.You must have got lucky and got the newer tires.

I tell you for over $400 a tire they should not be almost ten years old and starting to turn brown from age.The guy on the phone at Coker said I might get charged a re stocking fee if I return them. How ridiculous.

When you call and ask how old tires should be before they need replacement they say replace if they are seven years old.I wonder how many people buy old tires and not even know it.There is obviously a good reason the DOT makes the tire manufacturers put the date on the tire.

I've been able to get the TRX's in a fair range of sizes, including OEM for a Mondial, from Tire Rack without too much trouble. There are a couple of other domestic suppliers (beyond Coker and Tire Rack) for the TRX but these typically only have a few different sizes currently available.

SEND THEM BACK!!!!!!!!!! As i understand it, rubber has a 'life' of five years or so (optimally). Also, have them refund ALL shipping charges both ways. If they do not, you may have legal recourse as i think legally they sold you UNSAFE tires.

Personally I can't cost justify new wheels and tires for street/highway driving. I don't drive at the limit of the TRX so why raise the limits ? And I want to keep the car original.

Steve.. keep us posted on how you make out with Coker. I can't believe they'd ship tires older than they recommend should be replaced. Thats alot of cash for something well past its shelf life. And where the hell did they get them from if I got much newer ones in Jan of this year ?

Interesting that Coker would accept the liability of selling tires that exceed their recommended replacement age if they had a failure.

I bought a set for the 308 in 2005, which were vintage 2004. Got them new on Ebay for $100 each. Seller was "Mustangsally" and she (Im guessing she) asked if I knew anyone who wanted more.

Here are my updates.Tire rack does not have sizes for the Boxer or TR. They have some for the 308 type cars which are the 390's not 415's.Coker is going to take these old tires back. The good news is Longstones in the UK have some better rubber that was produced in 2004 and that's where I am getting the rears from.

Curious, did they offer any explanation as to why they now were shipping 9 year old tires when 2 months ago they had 1 1/2 year old tires ?

My guess would be they were out of stock of newer rubber and had the old ones hanging around and shipped them figuring you wouldn't notice.

All day long Coker was trying to have someone look at the stock and check date codes. The whole day went by with no results and then the sales guy argreed to just have these picked up.Longstone was quick to reply and told me all of their 280's were 2004 date, and I just went with them.By the time the guys at Coker look at the dates I will probably have these.
