Jim - You truly have a way with words - I'm guessing I'm not the only one sitting here reading this with goose bumps. Downloading the vids now - Thanks! Edit - OK watched the vids - Damn that P4 sounded incredible. Congrats!!

Thank you very much Boudewijn, it is a very fine example of the true GP Bugatti in it's unblown form! In my dreams....One fine day, I hope to be able to buy my own GP Bugatti...."SIGH" Best regards Carsten
I've been lucky enough to have driven a Bugatti T51. Wonderful experience; racing Bugattis are not quite like anything else. Unfortunately, in today's world I will never be able to afford one, even if I could find one for sale.
I recognise you and Clay Reggazoni, but who are the other two guys? Fantastic photos Jim. I hope to make it next year. If I hadn't been moving house, I would have been there this year.
The Gentleman on the right Won Le Mans in a 917 and finshed 500 feet behind the winning MK I another year in a 908 (?). The Gentleman next to me finished 2 twice at the Targa Florio, won Daytona, and raced F1 for Ferrari as well... This event is NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!!!
Superb shots, Jim, and I'd love to see the CD too. But who are those drivers? Is one Hermann? And have you had a chance to look round the old Siracusa Grand Prix road circuit? Paul M
Definitely Galli.........I'd forgotten he did one GP for Ferrari in 1972. But I saw Hermann at goodwood a couple of years ago.............doesn't ring a bell. Paul M
Hermann's co driver Gerald Larrousse. Is the GP track different from the anti- clockwise AutoDrome that's there today and where we drove on the video?? Best and Thanks to All!
Gerard Larrousse from the F1-team (at one time powered by Lamborghini), right? The gentleman on the far right. This looks and sounds like an awesome event. It must be totally mind-boggling to see and meet all these people and their cars that have had such a strong influence in making all that beautiful racing history. True hero´s I would say. Nice to see mr Regazzoni doing well.
Hi Jim. In fact Gérard Larrousse won the 1973 LM in a Matra-Simca MS 670B co-driving with Henri Pescarolo. In 1970 he came 2:nd in a Porsche 917L co-driving with Willy Kauhsen. (Hans Hermann won). And 1969...2:nd co-driving with Hans Hermann in a Porsche 908 LH. After 24 hours of racing...finishing less than a 100 meters behind the Ford. Very impressive. Best: Staff.
Yes, it went round the outside of the new autodrome, anti-clockwise as well - many photos show cars rounding a left-hand hairpin with low stone walls on both sides, the Curva della Madonnina. I think the autodrome uses the pits straight of the street circuit. Here are maps of the old and new circuits and a Multimap street plan of Siracusa, and a small photo from 1956. Met Hans Hermann at a Mercedes PR event in Brussels and he is definitly not in the last picture. I think I saw a recent picture of him on TNF this week. (Sad to see that those drivers are often ignored or lonely at those kind of events, we were maybe three or four to listen to him via an improvised translator).
At this event they weren't. They drove. They partied. They laughed and like the rest of us they all had a wonderful time. They come back year after year and next year even more will be there as that will be the 100th.
Napolis, You really should write a short story about your trip. Some of your descriptions really touched me. When I lived in Italy (studied abroad), I dated a young lady from the area you visited. She took me there once to meet her family...The passion of the people there is second to none. I can only imagine the overwhelming reaction you received from the men and women who were old enough to remember the early days of Ferrari. It seemed to me when I was there that nearly everyones life had been touched in some way by the cars from Maranello. Everyone had a story to tell, as I am sure that one day the children who were brought out of their homes to witness your passing will have a story to tell in the distant future!!!! It is always a nice thing when you can make a memory for yourself and someone else. Thanks for sharing. I am going to e-mail this thread to her.... Cajun.
They brought their children and they brought their grandchildren. They stood in the sun and spoke of what they had seen when they were young. They handed me lemonade and showed me faded photo's. The church bells rang and they were ringing for me... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Next year maybe you can manage to get copies of some of those faded photos and incorporate them into a book. Based on personal experience, some are better and more interesting than those taken by "known" photographers.
