    History
In the mid-1930s, Harley-Davidson followed up their R-series motorcycle with the W-series, otherwise known as the “45 solo” due to its 45 CID motor and single rider design. Featuring a new, recirculating oil system, Harley began producing WLA versions for the US Army in 1940 with leg shields, skid plate, luggage carrier, ammunition box and oil bath air-cleaner. Ultimately, some 90,000 of these military-spec bikes were made once the US entered WWII.

For the Canadian military, Harley created the WLC variant like the one up for auction today. Main differences from the WLA included heavier components and special blackout lighting. As soldiers returned home after the war, there was a yearning for the Harleys they saw or rode in Europe. As luck would have it, there was a large surplus of these bikes at low cost, which lead to the rise of choppers and biker culture as we know it today.

    Exterior
Featuring a steel frame painted green, this 1942 WLC is in good overall condition with a black leather seat and 18” yellow-painted wire wheels wearing Avon Roadrunner tires sized 120/90. Chrome trim and lighting surrounds looks to be in clean condition.

Highlights include the front and rear fender leading edge pieces emblazoned with an eagle. Harley-Davidson’s iconic centrally-mounted 120 mph speedometer shows some corrosion and is flanked by indicator lights for low oil pressure and a non-charging generator. Minor paint chipping is documented in the gallery as is a tear in the seat, while additional detail can be seen in the walk-around video.

    Mechanical
Fitted with its original 739 cc, v-twin flathead engine, this 1942 starts up and runs with no issues per the seller. The motor was built with four gear-driven camshafts actuating the valves with adjustable tappets. It is mated to a hand-shifted, 3-speed transmission that spins the rear wheel.

The transmission lever mounted on the fuel tank works in concert with the foot-operated rocker-style clutch pedal to engage/disengage the clutch. Developed in various forms over the years, this v-twin flathead was in use until 1973, making it the longest running production engine in Harley-Davidson history.

Up front is a leading link “springer” fork with the rigid rear setup known as a “hardtail”, while front brakes are actuated via the handlebar-mounted lever. An extensive gallery details the condition of this 1942 WLC that the owner estimates to be 80% original. The most recent service was an oil change completed last year.

    Details
Located in Richmond, British Columbia, this 1942 Harley-Davidson WLC is as cool today as it was 80 years ago. The seller purchased the bike nine years ago and has since added just 224 of the 31,693 original miles. Displaying an obvious level of care and upkeep, this WLC is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history and look good doing it.

Wow! I’ve never seen a Harley for sale on a Ferrarichat site :)

my dad is a huge Harley D fan. He’s owned over 50 of them in his life.

Any educated guess as to what something like this would typically sell for at auction??

what would be considered fair price on this bike ?
