my annual insurance renewal is coming up. State Farm sends me a form annually to fill out so they can keep track of the mileage, condition and value. i currently have my 79 w/ an agreed on replacement value at $42k ($1k deductable so $41k). it has 40k miles, excellent paint (original except cosmetic repsray on the driver's door), stock except for exhaust, k27, and 964 cams. overall excellent shape. petrol blue w/cork int, sport seats, LSD, and SR. any thoughts on the TRUE value? I see some cars w/ asking prices in the 50-70 range.

Charles, true value today - at least $60k. For you to replace, like kind, for insurance purposes....my OPINION :)

My '79 is for sale at $69,999. So far crickets chirping FYI. :D

3.3 liter 930 (time 3:32 and 3:34) in Porsche Museum Secrets: Part 1. This 930 has plate number S-DS 6511 and I have not seen this car featured in any period literature. Could this be a ROW 930 3.3 liter built for factory use (0011 to 0015). Looks like another 3.3 liter 930 with non-optioned sunroof/passenger mirror.

They're all like that, aren't they? My 78 SC's was mounted just like that.

To my knowledge, all York A/C Compressors installed through 1979 (some very late 1979 US cars had Nippondenso Compressors) were mounted vertically. I had not seen one mounted horizontally untill the '78 Australian car. When mounted vertically (normal) it sticks up rather high.

What VIN is your '78? Do you know if it was delivered that way?
I would appreciate any pictures showing how it mounts horizontally.

I would also like to continue to solicit any pros or cons vs Vertical or Horizontal York mounting.

My friend's 84 Carrera has a York compressor from the factory. Horizontal.

Mine is gone, (replaced w/ a rotary ) can't find a pic but it looked like this... From Pelican:

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/690717-80-sc-how-connect-service-hose-york-compressor.htm

It was difficult to change the oil filter on mine.

I've never seen one vertically mounted, I don't think.

    AutoWeek, September 3, 1979:

“The 930 will only hold on to the American title for a few more months since Porsche has decided to keep the cars at home next year. Emissions laws are getting too stringent and CAFÉ laws are beginning to put pressure on those vehicles not engineered with the Great God Economy in mind. The 930, with its unapologetic racing guts and piggish 12mpg EPA condemnation, will shortly retire undefeated, but after an extremely short stay atop the rankings.”

“There can be no question that the Porsche 930 is a magnificent machine. It is also the unquestioned speed king among readily available production automobiles in America today. For those reasons, the 930 has earned the title of #1 Super Exotic, and its already announced intention to give up the title will prevent too much bickering about he car’s credentials. Yes, the 930 and Ferrari 512 are an unlikely pair, but they will soon have one more thing in common: we will mourn both their absences from the American automotive market.”

In 1979, you could buy a Heuer Daytona chronograph for $99.50 at auto world and a 917-10 CAN-AM racer for $195K (OBO).

Now I understand why the last U.S. 930 press release is titled: “Porsche Turbo Retires Undefeated”.

Hey Tcar, thanks for opening my eyes. I should have said, all 930's I've seen with Yorks (other than the '78 Australian 930) had their compressors mounted vertically. After seeing the picture over at the bird I can understand how removing the Oil Filter would be a pain. Oil Filter removal with a 930 York mounted vertical is a piece of cake - everything else is not. I guess the simple reason is that the Turbo rear deck can accept it vertical and SC and Carrera decks cannot accept the height so it needs to be horizontal.

My curiosity now is focused on why someone would mount a York compressor in a 930 on the horizontal and what the benefits were?

Motor’s May 16, 1979 test car (plate number Y JH 122T) was also featured in; “Great Marques Porsche”, Chris Harvey (Octopus Books, 1980). I still have not seen a U.S. 3.3 liter 930 that had optional tartan dress interior (I've seen several ‘78/79 U.S. 911 SC’s that were tartan dress equipped).

This ’79 930 (Y JH 122T) was also equipped with dual-rear fog lights that were listed as optional equipment in Motor’s road test (single rear fog light was not standard on ROW 930's until 1981).

Lets cut to the chase, I have this thing for P7's...so before anyone else beats me to asking, does anyone have, or have information on the whereabouts of a set of Nos or near new P7's for standard Fuchs '79 930, I am a buyer. I have been digging up p7's of late, have a countach set, and just facilitated a set for a one off Mangusta.

I understand the pitfalls, these would be for show only, no spirited driving.

Hey idart, those '79 Le Mans stickers are cool.
Just noticed yesterday my Fuch Center Caps are now turning purple if you look at them at the right angle. Yes the early 930's are middle aged now but they still are sure fun to drive.

Thanks for that, but intent on the vintage ones that were the 'it' tire of the era...by a long shot. Made a lot of cars MUCH better drivers.

Hi Mang, OK, you got my curiosity peaked, can you educate me on there are differences. Do the new ones even look the same?

The tread pattern is different as well as the script on the side. I have not seen any original 930 P7’s for sale (Craigslist, eBay, Pelican, Rennlist, etc.).

From the Tire Rack link you posted, I was surprised to see the variety of tires still available for the ’78-79 Fuchs wheels. From what I read on Pelican, everyone was going away from their Fuchs wheels because of tire availability but perhaps this is only the case for the wider wheels on the ’86-89 930’s?

Yes, I believe the later 9X16's to be the issue. Us folks with 7X16 and 8X16 do not have a problem matching sets (as yet). I will be looking for tires in the not too distant future for my '79. Are the new P-7's worthy replacements?

i saw this car in Atlanta about a year before it went to RM when i started to look for a 930. it was being detailed at the Ferrari delaership in Atlanta (the onwer had F-cars also). the owner was there and i talked to him for a while about the car. he wanted mid $60s for it which back then was big money for a 79.
