See what we mean by the '78 and '79 930's being interesting? If your transmission is original to the car and you can post the number for it, we can probably tell you how that number fits into the 1978 production cycle.
Agree, the '78 engine numbers do seem high. I'm not sure where the numbers came from for the new book, but for the '78/79 930, the chassis and engine numbers are the same as those listed in the Porsche Family Tree booklet I received with my PCA membership back in 1995.
The 3.3 liter 930 in Porsche Museum Secrets: Part 1, plate number S-DS 6511 (time 3:32 and 3:34) was also featured in the 1980 ROW brochure. Was this car a chameleon changing from silver to light blue metallic? It sure looks like the same car with non-optioned sunroof/passenger mirror. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/ds65111.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/ds65112.jpg
So where are the suspected values of these cars like a early 79 does anyone really talk about the prices of these?
Spent a little time detailing the exterior. I love the way this car looks. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Black on black is a classic 930 color combo. It would be interesting to find out how many were ordered. This information remains elusive but perhaps someday, it will be available for the 930.
78 930, light blue metallic, plate S - DH 6829, featured in a Porsche AG Turbo poster. Unusual to see a 78/79 factory 930 equipped with the optional right-side mirror. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/6829.jpg
GERMAN................................ENGLISH Außer Konkurrenz....................Out of Competition PORSCHE...............................PORSCHE turbo....................................turbo And it looks to be a decked out Euro Sunroof Coupe as well. Nice brochure - what year is it? - anything else interesting in it?
The left image (poster) was issued in 2003 and this explains the caption; out of competition. This same poster appears on page 96 of Porsche Museums, Porsche turbo Stories (book's caption; Advertising Poster, 1977). I lost the source for the image on the right but perhaps this was not a factory car which would help explain a ROW '78 930 loaded with options.
This same light blue metallic 930 may have appeared on the cover of the June 1979 Christophorus. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/68291.jpg I believe the 2003 poster was a re-issue of a 1977 poster (featured the new 3.3 liter 930). Perhaps the caption: out of competition refers to a production (vs. racing) turbo.
I believe you are right. The more correct Teutonic intention is likely "born (out) of competition". And, as you certainly suggest, referring to Porsche's early competition influences on the type 930.

I believe the 79 930 on the right is chassis #1200. flickr caption: Porsche Parade 2010, Earliest surviving prototype Turbo 930 and Last 930! http://www.flickr.com/photos/steveoreno1/4769447993/sizes/l/in/photostream/

i though prototypes wers 75 models? that appers to be a 76 USA car. thanks for digging this stuff up....
The caption may be incorrect for the 3 liter 930. Perhaps it was actually a preproduction (vs. prototype) U.S. Turbo Carrera (although the first would have been the sliver/red tartan dress, chassis 9306800011). Seems like prototypes would be more like the 911 Turbo at the Sept '73 German motor show or the one featured in the Porsche Museum Secrets video driven by Louise Piech.
This same 79 930, chassis 9309700660, with pasha interior previously sold for £28,050 at a October 2011 auction. Pasha is polarizing but it kind of grows on you from the hypnotic effect. http://www.classic-auctions.com/Images/Report/119C/46570b.jpg http://www.classic-auctions.com/Images/Report/119C/46570a.jpg http://www.classic-auctions.com/Auctions/19-10-2011-ThePavilionGardens-1293/1979Porsche911Turbo-33870.aspx

Overseas decent 930's seem to be commanding high prices. Some of us think a lot of the early US 930's have already been exported because of this. The asking price for this 930 with over 250,000 kilometers (160,000 miles) is the equivalent of about $94,500 (US Dollars). It's listed as a '78 but the VIN shows it as a '79. A couple of changes are; it has a 1984 and up style front valance and the color is listed as Arctic Silver which, I believe, is a very late '90's and up color. The car is presented nicely and I visited the site and they do have quite a few interesting cars.
