My best friend has a 1979 930 turbo. He's the second owner and has had it since 1985.

    Triple black
    4 speed
    42,000 miles (edited, I thought was 32k)

All service done by a super reputable Porsche specialist shop. It's in very good, but not any type of concours, condition. Interior is good with some wear on the seat leather.

He's not necessarily looking to sell, just had no idea they were going up so much lately until I told him.

Can anyone please give me an opinion on ballpark price range? If you need more details please ask.

Nice find. Likely a NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type 930 (has RoW tail light lenses).
Can you post VIN and build date?

VIN 9309800620 with 06/79 Build confirms this is one of approx 800 NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type 930’s.

79 US 930 VIN's went from 9309800001- 9309801200, there first one sold was 9309800011, so production was 1200 cars with 1190 sold.

Correct, there is a total of 1190 North American 1979 Model Year 930's, BUT...

There were approx 800 NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type 930’s built during the 1979 Stuttgart production run. These were built side by side with 1979 MY RoW and Japan 930's and all 1979 MY 911's. ALL have Production (tub) Numbers 109xxxx. For the most part, they share many of the 1978 parts.

A second sequence of almost 400 NA 1979 MY 2nd Build Type 930’s were built during the 1980 Stuttgart production run. These NA 1979 MY 930's were built side by side with 1980 MY RoW and Japan 930's and all 1980 MY 911's. ALL have Production (tub) Numbers of 100xxxx making them different from the NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type. These also have 1980 part upgrades (including 85 MPH Speedometers starting with the 9/79 build).

Remember that once Porsche announced that the 930 was being discontinued in the US for 1980 demand was quite high. Porsche has always been quite good at bending the rules. They found a way to deliver 1980 identified 930 chassis, continued the VIN sequence, and called them 1979 Model Year 930's, BUT...

They are clearly 2 separate and distinct types.

The pictures below show Production Numbers from NA 1979 MY 1st and 2nd Build Types. The 1 identifies the chassis as a 911/930, the 0 is for Coupe, the third digit is the year - 9 in the 1st picture is for 1979 and 0 in the 2nd picture is for 1980. The last 4 digits are the production sequence start numbers which are a combination of all 911 and 930 coupes put into production for that year.

Even though the last group of U.S. 1979 930s had 1980 tubs, they were still 1979 model year cars all built in calendar year 1979. The only reason they had the 85mph speedos is that the U.S. Federal law went in effect in Sep '79.

I don’t think anyone really knows how Porsche produced the U.S. late-1979s or even if the tub numbers were built side-by-side with Japan and RoW cars. The tubs for the last 50 1979 Turbos were specifically sectioned off from the RoW models and they are in sequence to the chassis numbers, and this in itself is very unusual. Additionally, U.S. late-1979s never got the major upgrades of the 1980 RoW Turbos including the front oil cooler and two-tip exhaust. All the changes were minor and cosmetic (flush headlight washers, adjustable headlight bezels, Nippondenso A/C compressor, etc.) but also included the interior color changes which is my ’79 #1164 has a two-tone red/black interior in a ’79 Turbo. However, the U.S. late-1979’s kept their full leather interiors whereas the 1980 RoW Turbo models being built at the same time had portions in vinyl as indicated in the RoW factory interior charts.

Didn't know that about production numbers, thanks learn something new everyday. It is my understand that the changes to the 1979 NA 930's were phased in as the old parts depleted.

Yes, you are welcome. 1979 Model Year production was a departure from any and all years for the North American 930. While cosmetic parts changed, Porsche did not change engine parts on these "1979" NA cars. However, two safety changes, front seat belt receivers and the 85 MPH Speedometer (a month later) were introduced on the 2nd Build Types. Both were also incorporated on the NA 1980 MY 911's.

You bring up a good point in the understanding that "the changes to the 1979 NA 930's were phased in as the old parts depleted." Possible that Porsche itself was caught off guard in not planning correct 1979 stock levels due to the increased NA demand. By June '79, Porsche was on the way to increasing USA 1979 930 production by an additional 70% per month. Discounting this ramp up, and considering what a normal 12 month plan might be, NA 1979 MY 930 production would likely have been closer to 700 units (a modest increase over the NA figures for 1978). In October and November 1979 alone, almost 25% of the entire 17 month NA 1979 MY 930 1190 units were built.

Unlike the NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type 930’s, which were assembled during Porsche’s normal 1979 production period from 8/78 to 7/79 and had 109xxxx Production Numbers, the NA 1979 MY 2nd Build Type 930’s, assembled 8/79 to 12/79, all had 100xxxx Production numbers. Even though they were designated 1979 MY, these 100xxxx Production Numbers are part of the entire number population sequencing for all other 911/930 chassis that were designated 1980 Model Year.

Just some of the things that make the NA 1979 MY 930 special.

    Hi Rich,

NA 1979 MY 1st Build Type 930’s have the left pictured, "wire" type, front seat belt receivers with red release buttons toward the inside (similar to your '75 I believe?). They differ from the right pictured (1980 style) NA 1979 MY 2nd Build Type 930's that have a "flat bar" style with red releases at the top (like your late '79). I note that VIN #0756 has the later style, which is real close to the 08/79 production change over. They certainly are a more robust, stronger design.

The lowest NA 1979 MY 2nd Build Type 930 Production Number I have seen is #1000468 (numbers are a total or all 911/930 coupe chassis). It corresponds to an early NA '79 930 800 series VIN. I have asked owners of a few high 0700 and low 0800 VINs for their corresponding Production Numbers but haven't received all replies yet. I can confirm that the change-over between 1st and 2nd Build Types occurred at a lower number than what is published in Cotton's Book.

On our cars, the Production Number is stamped on the chassis under the right knee pad, below the radio. On the '79 930, it is quite easy to get to. Anybody needing help is welcome to PM me.

Post your numbers and I'll list them.
