@Schumi Happy to share. I just hope that each that use them, treats them with respect and doesn't grind them on price.

These ATE pads would be another possible (I liked them best for my ex-TR as they had the least overhang beyond the OD of the front brake disc -- not sure if that's also an issue on 400i):

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/174514223962

There are many other BMW pads that are this same overall size, but the thickness is 18mm (and won't work).

Finally some traction on the sport exhaust system. Crossover pipe and collector pipe are currently in fabrication stage. Tomorrow is the full weld up and oxygen sensor bung placement. This is the pass. side system. The driverside muffler is beneath the fixture.

Curious what the small X-over tube does when there is a full size X-over tube on the mail pipes.

These are not balancing the pressure on the same location:
    • The additional pipe (big one) is supposedly balancing the flow coming from cyl 1-3 with the flow coming from cyl 4-6
    • The stock pipe (little) allows to balance the pressure between the chamber and the slotted pipe
The stock pipe reduces the difference of pressure between the inside of the slotted pipe and the outside of the pipe (the chamber), so we can assume this is reducing the stress on the slotted pipe which is the weak part of the muffler. Maybe it also allows for better flow: as the pressure is more homogeneous between the slotted pipe and the chamber, I would expect less gas to pass through the slots, so less turbulence near the slots (?).

It seems there were quite a few variations:
    • On the Swiss Ferrari there is an additional X-Over under the trunk between the left and the right bank.
    • In one of my Friend's car the balance pipe had been tapped.
    • On the later 412, Ferrari removed the balancing pipes altogether.
As they finally dropped these, I would tend to believe that the effect was marginal. Also have to say that they are a pain to seal...

Thank you for the explanation. I have often questioned the small pipe's effectiveness, although it wouldn't be the first time Ferrari engineers added in a design with little impact on drive-ability.
In my case, I am considering straight pipes with cross overs just behind the headers on my '71 C/4. The small pipe port on the header would be capped.

@Zanny1 - I did just that and it sounds amazing to me. If I were to use the car for anything more than weekend morning romps around the countryside I'd probably tone it down a little. I did leave the last resonators/mufflers on the car to maintain the original appearance. Dropped a ton of weight too!

Now that the basic pipes are fab'd in. We turned to creating the exact style of muffler hanger brackets that ANZA used on the OEM mufflers. This included a new box section to support the aft pipes at the rear most hanger location. Bracket fabrication required making 6-8 pieces -hardly enough to commision a new stamping die. So we made a hand held tool and die to punch the final radius into the lip of each bracket. It's pretty medieval, but with a dozen or so carefully placed strikes we were able to recreate this curved feature. Here is a short clip: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0LfpLu_Kf_s

@06ZHP We are on the same page: the exhaust came home tonight and I can report an excellent fit to the headers and the hangers. On both sides. The small 26mm pipe flanges also were flush to the collector flanges. In these images the crushable donuts are not fitted so as to better view the parallelism of the two large flange faces. Both header collectors have reasonable give and movement in them. No changes, so we are all set for ceramic coating.

Very nice job on the ceramic coating. I have a NOS exhaust system that I will be installing and will be ceramic coated before installation. Can you provide more detail on the paint color, manufacturer for the ceramic coat. Is it close to the original color?

@Theruse I used Cerikote C-7300P Black velvet. This is an air cured ceramic coating designed for headers. (Cerikotes primary marketplace is the firearms industry). The quality of the outcome hinges on metal preparation and cleanliness. Cerikote is really specific about abrading the tubes / material and getting it very clean before applying. Smooth (shiny) surfaces are a no-no. It has to have some texture for the material to 'bit' into. It's rated to 1200 F. It sprays on like most automotive urethanes, maybe slightly higher in viscosity.

Exhaust system is finished. This part of the project was a severe miscalculation on actual the effort required to finish this center 'sport' system and to complete the modest repairs on the rear resonators. Won't make that mistake again. Here is the finished product(s). Center sections are back on the car. Rear resonators go on in the morning.

    Good day Paul,

Very nice! It is a good thing that I do not live closer or know where you live, otherwise those muffler pieces would have mysteriously disappeared :) ... and somehow found their way to my car...

Well done and keep up the great work, write ups, and pictures!

    Cheers,

    Sam

Is there a separate coolant drain plug on the engine block of the 365/ 400i's?

I am trying to purge all the incorrect coolant that is in the system. Simply draining at the bottom of the radiator is not getting everything out. Even on an incline.
