Hi guys, new here ... thought it would be a good place to share my restoration build on Ferrari Chat. I've found that with other builds I've done in the past, it helps keep me motivated, I can get help when getting stuck, and at the same time could be useful / interesting for other people. :)

The car is an ex Kessel Racing, which was then purchased by Pablo Clarke Racing, and now will be a track day machine for me to have fun with and live out boyhood dreams of becoming a racing driver, which I never did or will be! But that's ok! Made peace with it :-D

    The teardown started yesterday.
Plans are to strip the car down fairly substantially, but not fully.
    Motor rebuild where needed.
    Suspension, brakes, etc.
And then a good cosmetic cleanup and paint.

Thanks @Jasonberkeley .... Appreciate the kind words ! Yeah - super excited to get this thing on track.

    .........

    UNDERTRAY

The undertray is a pretty bad, as could be expected. The sections where the venturi tunnels meet between the undertray and the rear diffuser had about an inch gap - which Im sure is neutralizing a lot of downforce, and the issue really is with the undertray - but I have no reference and don't know where to start regarding repairing it, but the guys at Pablo Clarke have a mold for one ... so I'm going to get a new one made.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

These look pretty bad as well, but I think I can fab up a new set ... will see ...

    FRONT VALENCE

The car came with the factory style front bumper. I dont mind how it looks, but I really like the GTN style front ...

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

This for me is first prize, but what I've found so far online is just stupid expensive ...

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

So I 3d scanned my cars front with the idea of playing around it in cad and seeing what I could come up with ... (for another day)

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Pablo Clarke have this mold -and it can be made when the undertray is done ... but I'm not sure how I feel about the design ...

What are you guys thoughts on this ?

The inside of the front bumper on my car has what appears to be a signature ? Ziggy ? Any ideas?

Good luck with the restoration/rebuild. You much be in/near South Africa of you are getting a bumper cover and bottom tray from Pablo Clark. Those are expensive parts to transport. Having repaired many Ferrari and C car trays I would recommend repairing where you can! Especially C cars as repairs are normal maintenance :)

Thanks! Yup I'm in the Kyalami area.... but Ill be taking the car with me to the US in a year or two ...
I hear what you're saying about logistics ... shipping stuff to ZA is pretty costly, so getting as much done here is the way to go.
    Where are you based?

    :-D

Very cool thread, this used to belong to a guy who was a true giant in the Ferrari world. He was trying to convince me to buy it before his sad passing. Looking forward to following the restoration.

Well I'm very glad you turned it down ... :-D ... and yes I believe Mr Cavalieri's reputation preceded him ... I never met him personally.
I literally go to sleep thinking about this thing, and wake up figuring out what I'm going to do next on it .... This really is a dream project for me.
I take it you've got a Challenge Stradale based on your avatar name Jacques?
CS - Bucket list car for me.

I am glad it has gone to a good home, Giorgio was an incredible individual who had such passion for Ferrari. I remember having dinner with him "now cmon buy my 360 Challenge'. After dinner I was given a first hand lesson on the magic of the flat 12.

Good luck with the project but if there is one piece of advice I can give, try get it as close to original as possible. The other is there is a user on this forum who has the most incredible software updated for the 360, its night and day on the road car the difference and above that there is a technical expert in Cape Town busy with a very unique 360 project who I could put you in contact with.

    Very cool story :)

Regarding keeping it original, yup that's the plan, but there are a couple of small deviations I want to make - like for example doing a satin or a matt clear on all the carbon fiber pieces, instead of gloss, and I want to change the color from Rosso Corsa to Rosso Scuderia ...

Another thing Im considering is changing out the sparco bonnet latches with cleaner anodized units - I just have never liked the sparcos, which Ferrari still uses today I think - they look like hardware store parts to me ... ? What do you think ? Would this detract from the ethos of the car?

Regarding the software upgrade - that sounds very cool - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Very keen to chat tio you regarding the CT expert guy ....

Will post some pics in the next couple of days ... been busy on a ton of small items.

@Mel Spillman very nice ... yes I am looking at those - the only issue is they're too large for the rear of the 360... They look really good on that GT3 hood !
So you dont think not using the sparco units is an issue regarding detracting from the car?

    ..............................

While all the heavy lifting is happening at the shop - Ive been working on some fun detail items at home ... Ill be sharing the big ticket items in due course.

The rear taillight panel has Kessel Racing on it -which was done at Kessel, so this is a really nice touch on the car.
When it was fitted, it needed some light grinding in places, which has now started rusting, so was nice to be able to get rid of all the rust and give it a touch up so that it wont rust in the future ...

Something I've always liked to do with plastic and rubber parts is to give them a proper clean and then soak them in silicone for a few days.
It seems to rejuvenate plastic and rubber. Then a wipe down with a soft cloth. I haven't polished the lenses, this is just from the silicone, but I might at some point.

Lenses came out pretty good, but one of them is cracked, so will be looking for a replacement.

Thanks man... no - not a wrap - its real carbon fiber laid over the part with resin. The resin is then sanded away as much as possible. Resin has weight, so it adds a touch of weight to the part, depending how well you can lay the CF, but this isn't a competition car anymore, so thats not super important to me. Ive done the same to the rear wing.

Wow, all this beautiful restoration work is laudable. Looks really nice, almost too nice!

You probably already know this, but Ii you're going to track (even HPDE), it's going to get dings, blemishes, rock strikes, possibly worse. **** happens, especially on track.

I'm tempted to pretty up the 458CH, but decided there is not much point. It'll look like it does now in no time flat and I'd rather put $$$ into performance and features I need/want on track (like the Garmin Catalyst and camera).

Keep us posted on the project, happy for you!

For sure. Exactly what I was grappling with initially.
Initial idea was to do a full mechanical due diligence and repair and then a light cosmetic cleanup.
BUT - Im just not built that way :-D
Restoring this thing is as much part of the fun as driving it is for me.
I grew up in my dads garage where he restored classic and vintage cars, and its been part of my life since a kid, so how can I not go all in with this?

Im not going to be racing this car, Im going to be tracking it. Im well aware of the degradation that happens even in light track use, but that's ok. I'm cool with that. Im just happy to be doing this.

Big fan of 458's btw. I have the road car and to say I love it is an understatement.
There was a 458 GT3 at Pablo Clark when I was there the other day ... spent a bit of time checking it out, and kinda imagined how nice it would be on track, based on what I know about how well the road car behaves, especially the gearbox, which IMHO is one of the best out there.
