This is going to be one good looking GT/E

Question: Why are the surfaces where the window seals etc are sitting left painted? Depending on what type of paint was used previously (assuming it was not the factory paint) the new paint may react with it, unless he uses some type of blocking coat. Also, on any car I've ever done those were places wherre I found rust (of which this car has remarkably little), as moisture gets trapped between seal/rubber and sheetmetal.

    Hi Jack,

It's not paint but rather the high-built primer which also has a green hue (see post 74). Al always leaves those hard to reach areas for last to remove the old paint (see post 72).

We're getting closer to the final result! Al writes:

a couple of pics from today, as you can see all the final stoppering work is done, and I have applied the final wet-on-wet primer to the body, which just needs blocking down and then we're ready to paint!

Actually, the green hue is what's known as a "guide coat". It can be any color that's contrasting to the base primer. It's applied after the primering is done. It's used to show the surface imperfections(highs and lows in the body surface). During the "block sanding" the "highs will become the base primer color, and the lows will be the guide coat color. The surfacer will continue to "block sand" the surface until there is no more (in this case green) showing. Hopefully the body surface is good enough that only one blocking is necessary(often not the case), in which case more primering will be necessary, and more "blocking", depending on the desired perfection of the body one wants to achieve. Regards, Mike

    Hi

Can you reveal the (estimated) cost for the strip down/rust repair/paint job on this wonderful car?

    All the best

    Hi

Al has a price list on his website:

    http://www.alsaautomotive.co.uk/

Although the GTE is not listed, you can get an idea.

Thanks, you're right, the GTE does deserve the attention. It should be ready well in time for the GTE meeting in The Netherlands in June.

Thanks but the credits must go to Al of Alsaautomotive. He's a real wizzard!
Also I'm not the owner of the GTE. The owner is a very good friend of mine who isn't very good with computers so he lets me keep up this thread. I recommended Al to my friend after he'd done the bare metal respray on my 308. I can't give him enough praise. Even now he's helping me out with replacing a worn window channel strip. He's sent me instruction pictures and enough channel length to replace the broken one, without costs!

    On the GTE:
Al has done some more work, this time on the bonnet/hood and the trunklid.

It's been a busy week and last week I was away for the Mille Miglia. In the meantime Al has made excellent progress on the paintjob. He's sent more than 100 pictures from the last days! He was able to take some pictures outside in the sun. He's started to put all the pieces back together again. All the trim and chrome make the paint stand out even more. Great job, Al!

With regard to the thread about the butchered 250 GTE ('where's the engine?') let's use this update as an example of how these lovely Ferraris should be treated.

Al is going along nicely. She's beginning to look like a complete car again.
She should be ready for the 250 GTE anniversary meeting in The Netherlands on June 13th.
