I like the Alaska license plate!
Jack, I missed your mail first time round. Sorry. That would really help us out thank you. John and I now have two files, one with text details and history and one with images (John - the file I tried to send but is way too large at 113mb). Can you mail me at : [email protected] so we can discuss further. Thanks Darren.
Hi -- I'm new to FerrariChat, and am not a Ferrari owner. I am, however, a passionate fan of the PF coupe, and have been since I first saw one in Automobile Quarterly Vol 1 No 1 in 1962. I've nearly become a PF coupe owner twice, and I'll recount these stories in case they are of interest to anyone. #1 -- A Northwest Airlines pilot offered a car for sale in Minneapolis circa 1985. This was a black car in first paint (slightly crazed) with a fresh red interior and fresh wheels, and he was asking $17,000 for it. I thought it was a very nice car. Regrettably I was just starting a business and decided I'd better keep the money for that purpose; in retrospect I would have made more money if I'd bought the car and re-sold it in '88 than I made in the business. Sorry I don't know the chassis # or the seller's name, but I found it in the Ferrari Market Letter so somebody could probably track it. #2 -- In the mid 1990's, a guy ran an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle for a PF coupe less engine and gearbox, best offer. He was a home-garage Ferrari mechanic with a divorce settlement requiring that he sell the car and turn the proceeds over to his ex; I had the sense that he would have sold it for peanuts. It was a red car, tan interior as I recall. It was missing a couple of trim bits, but was quite presentable. Advice from a Ferrari-owner acquaintance indicated that the engine and gearbox were valuable enough that even if he GAVE me the car I would probably be upside down before I had a nice driver. Ah well. Again, no # or owner's name. More recently I asked Bob Mosier, a superb restorer in the LA area, if he was interested in selling his coupe (in restoration). He isn't. I bought a set of (5) 16" Borranis from England on eBay, intending to use them on another car. When that didn't happen I sold them to Art Taxman of Florida for his PF Coupe; Art may be on this board. If I haven't bored everyone senseless, I'll say a bit more. I'm an Art Center-trained designer, and have a good eye for automotive design. I personally find the PF coupe to be one of the most elegant cars ever built, and I have never understood why it is near the bottom of the 12 cylinder food chain. I thought for a long time that black or silver were the only suitable colors for these cars, but my opinion has changed in the last couple of years. I now think that John V's car is the most elegant coupe I've seen. Incidentally, in answer to a question asked on this thread: yes, Bill Cosby owns (or owned) a grey coupe. I have a picture of it that I took from a New England mechanic's website, if anyone's interested.
Hi Tony, You said $15,000 for a PF coupe in 1985. That is about right. It is interesting that 5-6 years prior they were half that price. In fact, mine changed hands for $6500 in 1978. Though they seem pretty high priced today, all things considered, they are still a lot of vintage Ferrari for the money. The recent appreciation will bring more cars out of the woodwork, but the sad reality is that quite a few are gone for good. The two cars that were at Cavallino Classic this year were also very elegant in that gunmetal gray. One of them, 0943GT, the sixth(?) PF coupe, changed owners around 2003 for a pretty reasonable sum, even by that times standards. 0943GT was a very nice and original car. john
I paid $17,000 in 1985 for my PF coupe and I thought the price was a little on the high side but it was a good car. Obviously it worked out very well when I sold it in late 1989.
John: I am relieved that these prices approximate what I paid for mine: $4995 in 1975. The fellow I bought it from at the Pentagon paid $3995 for it in 1974. Ed
What's the story of this car? I happened on it on the net by accident. john Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
1433 GT is owned by Christian Geistdörfer of Neubiberg, Germany. He used to be co-driver of rallye star Walter Röhrl. Marcel Massini
Thanks Kare and Marcel. As PF coupes go, 1433GT must be a special judging from the bezel below the doors and the bonnet treatment. Are there any other oddities about this one? john
I just wanted to let you ALL know that if you need spinners for your PF Coupes I can give you info of a place in UK where you can buy them. 42mm. They are 560 Pounds Sterling for a set of 4 which equates today to around $996.80 for the set. First, I tried to purchase them in the USA and they wanted $1600 with absolutely no discount given. If you want the info you can you send me a personal message. Thanks LeslieWales
I have just received a letter from FOC UK saying they are putting together a "Front Engine V12 Group" and the first event will be at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor on 7 May. It is good that they are looking at reinvigorating some interest in the front-engined V12 cars. They also plan to develop a data base of V12 cars. There had been a V12 Register at some point but this seems to have fallen away at some point. I will do all I can to be there with 1479GT - hope to see other UK (and international) PF owners there if at all possible. If you are interested in attending, please write to Andrew Seward at FOC V12, 35 Market Place, Snettisham, King's Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 7LR. Hope to meet as many of you there as possible! Roger
Ed, There is a lot of info and pictures of Roger's car (including the restoration process) at www.tomyang.net Regards, Art S.
I'm not great on posting photos here - I will email some photos of 1479 GT to someone if they will agree to post them. Roger
Art: Thanks for the tip. Tom Yang's web site is wonderful, I love the gallery section, very nice. The car is beautiful, just a bit lighter in color than mine. The interior is terrific. Thanks for sharing. Ed
Ed, Tom Yang's site and this one have a lot of overlap in membership but the sites have a very different feel - Tom's being geared toward mutual support of vintage V-12 Ferrari owners. I would suggest you post pictures and stories about your cars there (Boano too, even though you no longer own it), but considering I've never gotten around to posting my story, I'm not in a position to ask. By the way, if you read Tom's posts, the one related to our 10/23/05 gathering gives you a sense of the group. By the way, did you see John V.'s entries in the owner's gallary? Regards, Art S.
Jurgen, just emailed some photos to you of 1479GT now. Would be grateful if you can post for me. Thanks, Roger
Before Jurgen gets the actual images uploaded Roger has to let me post this drawing of his car (FER 6). Kind of cool ... the real thing looks even better. Darren. Image Unavailable, Please Login
