OK.... I have to ask, what brilliant Italian engineer thought it was a good idea to put the alternator adjustment bolt that one must access, towards the engine center (away from easy reach of some poor sucker like me)? I cannot get a 17 mm wrench to stay on that nut, i bought a new 17mm, cut it in half (because there is NO room between the nut and the firewall) I can't get any leverage on the new modified wrench, and i am STUCK. I'm just trying to get my dang cam belt cover off to change out my water pump ( and cam belts and tensioners while I'm there). I managed to maneuver my way through getting the ac compressor out, now I'm stuck with the bracket attached to the cam belt cover and the alternator, cant get it off. Any suggestions??

PS. Thank God the bolt holding the dipstick tube to the cam belt cover is facing away from me, so i can't see it!

    Frustrated in KC

I had similar difficulty working on my Mondial alternator (see http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=277405 ), but with a 308 you have even less room to work with in there than me. I ended up using a stubby flexible ratchet like the one pictured below. Or if that doesn't work another good idea I heard was to take both rear wheels off and using a socket with a long extension to reach the bolt from the drivers side.

You should be able to crawl underneath and access it with a 1/2" drive socket and long extension(s). At least I could.

    Come on!

That's one of the more accessible operations on the car!

Put the whole rear up on stands so you can slide under there and see what you are doing. I do mine thru the fender whell but it is only by feel, at that point...

Is it different from 78 to 81?
I just removed the lockdown bolt on my 78 last night by reaching in through the passenger wheel well (tire removed) with a ratchet, pointing mostly downwards.

I think people lose the 'lock down' fitting that slides in the bracket slot, or inadvertantly turn the bolt backwards to avoid hitting the dipstick tube...

Neither is a positive development, for those who follow......

Well, there is no lock down fitting that slides into the bracket slot on mine. The other
question i would have is, after getting at this nut from under the car with long extensions on the socket, how in the world are you supposed to be able to adjust the alternator for proper belt tension, then get under the car to tighten it without loosing your belt tension?

I welded these ears on the end of the bolt, of course when I tried to reinstall it,
there was not clearance for both ears, so I sawed one ear off.
The bolt is now "located", so it cannot spin, makes it so much easier.....

I use a big wedge of wood, between the alternator case and the engine block, as I am usually by myself, don't go crazy as you don't want to stress the bearings, there's a deflection diagram, and even a tension tool, but after burning all the plastic belts I have, you get the "feel"......

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to try the wood block approach to hold tension. I've decided to leave the ac compressor out for now, it weighs a ton and I never use the it, always top off and windows down!

Possibly, I'm inclined to keep it for reinstall later when and if I ever sell the car.
