On the german ebay edition I bid 75 Euro on an original 328 exhaust, and surprisingly i won it, for 72 Euro.

I have 2 good original exhausts now and I intend to modify one to get some more sound from it. Has anybody done this before? I'm thinking of cutting of the double 1 in 2 endpipes form the 328 exhaust and fit "megaphones" single endpipes, they were an option on the GTO (see picture). I think this will already make an improvement in sound, as the original twin pipes have some sort of absorber/damping material in them. If I want it real loud, I could open up the silencer and replace the perforated pipes inside (I suppose they are there) with closed pipes. Does anybody know how the silencer looks like from the inside, how the pipes run? Has anybody changed a damper before? Anybody has tips?

    Thanks, Bert.

It's not just volume you are affecting, you will also change the tone. I have heard a two outlet exhaust similar to what you show, and it had a much deeper tone, not the typical higher pitched Tubi sound....

I suspect you've bought an ANSA exhaust. I've been told my Euro 308's ANSA was one of the loudest exhausts anyone had heard. Not sure if it's louder than a TUBI tho.

Anyway, to the point, one of the members had a shop rebuild his
ANSA exhaust & posted a photo or two. Search the original FerrariChat Tech Q&A archives.

I've got a Euro ANSA, and it's fairly loud. However, I think it sounds like a 4 cylinder. The Stebro sounds more like a traditional V8. They come with removeable silencers in the tips. The one I heard on a race track could be heard from over a mile away.

My office parking lot dumps right onto a 55 mph road and I'm told that my 84 QV with TUBI makes the building windows shake when I leave!

My 308 QV has a Tubi and no cat. It is loud. Removing the cat makes it more "throaty"

I had a Kermit exhaust for a while and it was damn loud. After a while it gives you headache..... But if you want loud, talk to Kermit.

Thanks for all the responses. Navygakman, not much exhaust there! It looks loud already just laying on the floor. Couldn't find a useful link to kermit exhausts in a quick google search.
Here is what I did. My car is a 2-valve injection US model but the cats were already replaced with testpipes when I got it. I modified the exhaust that came with the car so that it would fit much further forward (as there is room now without cats) and get rid of that ugly exhaust cover.
The exhaust I got now from ebay was a standard 328 one and I already knew I had to cut of the connecting pipes, as it wouldn't fit. Today I tried fitting the exhaust and first I thought it would never go under there, I think the US 308 may have some extra square tubes for chassis strengthening compared to a euro 328. Finally I could get it to fit, made new brackets. I had to cut of the 1 in 2 chromed endpipes because they were sticking out of the car, you know the 328 has this bigger fullsize bumper. Now I'm planning to get me some "megaphone-like" endpipes and weld them to the muffler. Will look meaner and probably sound meaner, as you can "see" in the muffler now through the endpipes, before the Y-shaped 1 in 2 pieces prevented that. I think like Dave Handa said, this will make a deeper sound. So I'll go looking in the "ricer" stores for some suitable endpipes and to the hardware store to get some 90 degree bends and 1 meter of pipe, to connect the muffler to the headers/testpipes, I can use the connecting plates again that I cut off from the muffler.
If all doesn't work out I've waisted about 100 dollar and a days work, on the other hand, maybe I have found the secret $100 receipe for 355 tubi or 360 stradale sound! Probably not though :)

I really like the sound of my euro exhaust. The Tubis are too loud for me.

If you don't like the results, search the old FCHAT Tech Q&A archives for 'flowmaster' and 'muffler'. One of the members adopted a std flowmaster high flow muffler to his 308. Only to decide it was 'too loud'

To those that have heard my Borla (Dave H. & DJParks), how does it compare in respect to sound level and quality to other exhausts?

I love it, but find it at times to be too loud...

    Peter,
I find the Borla's to be very similar to the Tubi's in volume, with just a slightly lower pitch. I heard a GT4 with no cats in the I-90 tunnel in Seattle and it wailed like you wouldn't believe! :)

Over the past 12 months I made the following changes to my 1984 308GTSi.
    1. Installed Tubi Exhaust - Result - Louder (Low End Rumble)
    2. Removed the Cat - Result - A little increase in volume but more importantly the pitch increased.

The result of both of these was to increase Horse Power (10-15 HP) and get a much better sound. The sound at the 5500 rpm level is unbelievable.

Looks like you want the endpipes of a Devil exhaust.
They sold these, complete exhausts, for French cars Like Renault-Alpine and Matra.
I tried to find you a website from Devil to show the tips but no luck, just new car and bike exhausts.
On the site of a dutch Alpine and Matra specialist there is a picture of a Devil exhaust for the Alpine A310 V6.
    www.koutauto.nl/ned/magazijn.htm

btw when are you going to put some new pictures on your own site?

Reviving an old thread, here is what I did. Don't know how it sounds yet, first I want to perform some maintenance on the engine, since it was not running for 1.5 year.

Looks mean, but maybe I should listen to the Stones: paint it black. I'll wait to see the look after it had been heated and some roadgrime on it.

    Just throwing my $.02---

I tried the flowmaster thing and the car sounded like a dumptruck---I have the muffler still and will give it away happily if you want to pay the shipping--else it will go tothe dumpster soon.

I got a new Euro Ansa for my 308 gtsi and have used it on the 308v4 and 328 motor ( had to cut and move the inlet tubes slightly) and it has a very nice and loud tone.

Also Ansa USA in here in GA and they are on this site a lot.

I believe they claim that the Ansa makes more HP that Tubi on 308's and I would tend to believe it-- Ansa has a looooong history with Ferrari.

    Get an ansa exhaust.
I have one on my 79 308 and above 50 mph you have to yell in order for the passenger to hear you.

PLEASE post a sound file of that! Oh and anyone looking for Kermit, can find him at www.durable1.com. I think he might still have the exhaust available for purchase...
