My oil cooler is apparently leaking pretty badly. I'm told it needs to be replaced. Anyone have any idea as to approximate cost of this part?

(I know, check Ricambi -- I'm hoping Daniel will see this post, or I'll call him.)

    Thanks in advance.

Got one from Italian auto parts about 6 months ago for about $375, in a Ferrari box. It was just about one half the size of the original, no kidding one half the size. The mounting points were the same size, but the cooler area was a lot less.

I just received a mocal cooler for $175. it is a bit bigger but also a bit thinner, overall, the cooling surface area should be very close. The Mocal cooler comes with -12 AN size fittings.

I am also installing a Mocal thermostat and converting the oil cooler hoses to aeroquip, (-12 size hoses and fittings).

This will not be that cheap but it will be nearly bullit proof and repairable in "the field".

    chris

Here are the photos for the above post.

If i recall correctly, the guy at Italiancar parts said that this was the only cooler avaiable for replacement. That would be the little guy on the left.

The one in the middle is the stock unit and the one on the right is the $175, AN-12 mocal unit.

    hth,
    chris

p.s. I have been running with an oil cooler bypass pipe while i get around to doing the plumbing. With daily use, (not blasting up hills), i have been getting along fine without a cooler - not recommended in hot climates or hard use.

I was told by a cooling expert that a larger frontal area for "first pass" cooling is the most efficient. He said multi core exchangers work well but loose efficiency with each row of "cores" resulting in less of an efficiency gain than would be expected. That's why you won't find radiators with more than 4 cores in most cases.

Your Mocal should show good efficiency even though it is thinner due to the larger frontal area.

I have always thought that a fan(s) for the oil cooler would be a good idea for those who get stuck in traffic on really hot days. Takes the load off of the cooling system quite a bit.

WOW that is a SMALL oil cooler and thanks for the heads up. When it comes time to replace the Mocal is the way to go for sure IMHO.

    Spasso,

    Good, to hear from you,

I am working on a thermostatically controlled puller aux fan, (Mocal's 7.5 inch 440 cfm unit on the back side of the mocal cooler.

Got to slightly modify the fiberglass air intake scoop, do the aeroquip plumbing and find a 210-220 degree temp switch to activate a relay to make the fan blow.

BTW, have a Mocal -12 180 degree thermostat for the cooler to try to get the temp up quicker.

    With questionable humility,
    i remain,

    Hi Chris,
    Likewise.

There is only one time in the ownership of my 308 where I really wished I had an oil cooler fan. It was so hot out that as I was cruizing along behind a Boxer (in a long line of very warm Ferraris) at 40 MPH my cooling fans kicked on (I have indicator lights).

Otherwise, if the temperature gets below 50 I have a custom made black foam plug for the cooler inlet to keep the temps UP. My cooler works very well.

I will keep Mocal in mind when mine craps out.

Has anyone ever wired a fan to the back of an oil cooler? It seems like a logical upgrade. And on the subject of fans is an extra radiator fan feasable? It looks like the Mondial radiator has space and mounts for another unit.

I have an aftermarket cooler similar to the mocal one only mine is about 2 rows less than the original.I had to have some fittings made up from a hydraulic hose shop.a few months ago it developed a slight leak.I brought it to a few radiator repairers and they said they couldn't fix it.I then brought it to a specialist welder and he couldn't guarantee it but would try.He was able to fix it and it has been fine since.Or you could buy this one.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ferrari-308-Oil-Cooler-very-good-condition_W0QQitemZ120008194338QQihZ002QQcategoryZ10380QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
