I am starting my winter project, lets just say belt service and more. One thing I am anticipating is work on the fuel tank predicated on that dangling sound I hear when the engine is not running and I slosh the fuel by swaying the car. Tinkle tinkle. Darn!

Looking through the forums it appears the culprit will be a baffle or two becoming dislodged. The fix for witch is not readily clear:

    1) Get an expert to weld it back (difficult and is some cases impossible) ?

    2) Maybe incorporate anti-slosh foam kits (my tank is not leaking and maybe I can get the baffle steady with this idea)?

    3) Other ideas?

I'll know more when I have the tank in my hands but I am pretty sure what I will find.

Check for post by Ernie who had the same issue. He was able to find a specialist to weld the interior baffle and make leak repairs, but this is done with unit out of the car. Alternatively, you can look for a replacement used part.

Yeah pull it out of the car and take it to a specialist in tank repair. They will purge it and weld it up. Pretty easy fix.
Not something to try of you never did it before

    :)

SoCal1 .... thanks for the advice, I am hoping you are correct and that there are places nearby in Ottawa with the expertise, There has been no leaks yet so this is preventative!

I do a lot, including welding, but this tank welding is a job I would leave to someone else, stand back 200ft, and get my iphone on record mode.

Almost blew myself up welding a friends oil pan (still on the car and flushed out with lacquer thinner). Well it did explode but not enough for anything to go flying. Pan probably had another 1/2 qt capacity from it being bowed out in every dimension.

As for the tanks, I empty and after a day of leaving it open, flush out with water. I then hook up a tube from my cars exhaust to the tank and let exhaust run through the tank for a few hours. (evaporating the rest of the fuel and flushing out any remaining fumes).

Have not had a problem doing that but still cringe the first time I strike an arc o_O

    LOL

Lacquer thinner the virgin stuff is explosive big time
We used to take the 5 gallon cans put 1 gallon in them, tap a spark plug into the top, let sit in sun a wee bit and fire it with a condenser. It was how I teach my guys to be careful in the shop.
So when I was on vacation they did it with a 16 gallon drum, bunch of smart ass's, the mushroom cloud caught the attention of the police for sure LOL

    You effing maniac...

I used to have a chemistry professor who … on the first day of class would bring down a balloon of hydrogen and oxygen and then light a match to demonstrate how making water can be explosive. He would then increase the size of the balloons. By the time he got to the 50 gallon size balloons, all the students cleared the room.

I don't think that flies anymore.

I removed an oil tank from an VW, then took it off the car to a professional welder and paid him $20 for tig welding. No explosion, thank you very much.
You know, people forget how much energy is available in a gallon of gas... when it lets go with a boom.

As Vince said, my old tank had the internal baffles pop off the spot welds. One of the welds pulled out of the bottom of the tank which resulted in a severe gas leak. I after washing the tank out with water, I left it sit for a few weeks in the hot sun, open, to evaporate as much of the fumes from the tank as possible. I found a welder who cut open a flap in the bottom and welded up the tank. He used rosette welds because they are stronger compared to the spot welds the factory used.

That tank eventually got crushed and replaced with a used tank.

@ernie , my tank is out and the baffle that was making noise is completely off. I'm mucky there was never a leak, but I knew to dig in because we noticed the sound when pushing the car around the driveway without engine running. I'll take it over to a specialist and hope for the same welding magic. Need to replace all the rubber components in the pump assemblies I noticed. They looked perfect but could not be touched without collapsing.

My Chemistry professor did this on the first day of class as well. So it still flies, at least in the south. He did a demonstration at an open house and lit about 10 balloons at once. It set off many car alarms in the parking lot haha.
