Broke a strap on my bib overalls....kids thought I was making a fashion statement...not! Off balance now and it has me walking in circles
I could not agree more. I too was fondling the tools for hours after I opened my package. The wire cutters, the crimper, the anodized-handled terminal remover...sorry I have to stop, I'm drooling! The best, however, is the terminal boot installation tool...sheer brilliance!!! Remember kids, a patent has been filed and is pending! Dave is an absolute icon and the epitome of a true professional. His knowledge and abilities are only exceeded by the non-egotistical manner in which he shares these attributes. Now, if I could just get him to let me clone him...
$12,200 as a starting point is a lot of money. You know it is just going to go up from there for sure. Make sure you keep the lube handy if you decide to take it in to the dealer.
If I ever get to the point where I actually own a Maule, the budget says it will be one of the garden variety "Highly Bent" models missing a few minor bits such as the wings..... Just a week ago Bruce called and said he found me a "mint, one owner, VW conversion, Texas Maule...only lawn darted twice, CHEAP.....an easy restoration with less than a dozen tear points in the skin....anyone think this sounds familiar? Kris would find me sitting in it out in the barn making engine noises like a 8 yr old sitting in his wooden go-kart... Bruce just wants someone else with a project that will take longer and cost as much as his snorkled 355! I'm too busy machining a billet buckle for the overalls strap that failed. Some dreams are destined to remain just that....
A dream? ****!!! This is no dream my friend, take a look at this....This is from controller.com 1994 Maule 2800 total time and only 700 on a factory reman engine....$62K Thats no different than a 355!!!! Pull the trigger!!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You said you'd like to have a TR Jetfixr......I found one for you! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I purposely did not look at that site after your recommendation.... and now photo's to boot (sigh!) It is becoming imperative our wife's never meet.....
Jet: What are the avionics like in the Maule? We can't have "The Man" flying around in Colorado in a plane that can't be flown in IFR conditions. Weather comes in too quickly in the mountains.
Oh no!!! Took me 18 yrs to get over leaving racing and required I hang all of my cars from the ceiling and walls so no tires were on the ground to tempt me. You two have been reading too many completely misguided threads about how profitable small auto repair shops are!!! Toyota or Honda maybe, surely not Ferrari! I did respond to a Craigslist ad regarding an abandoned homemade 1980's ultralight project last weekend.... That got me thinking.... Twenty some years ago I bought up all of the remaining stock of thin wall 4130 tubing from a company in Minneapolis that built the gliders that were used for the Invasion of Normandy..... it was destined to fly! A near mint one season old tarp used for covering the hay stack, part out the old ATV behind the barn for the engine, take the wheels off the windsurfer (Bruce has photo's of that failed effort, boy did that hurt...put me in a knee brace for a month)..... That old ultralight could fly but the plywood is a bit dry rotted and it being a front lifting Canard style has me concerned and will require some further reading prior to flight. When I get my bailout check and with all of my accumulated tax cuts for small businesses I could upgrade to 6v VW power.... I offered $200 for the ultralight project and his wife said YES!!!!, he is thinking about it. IFR??!! Im worried about the pine tree at the end of the pasture, what are you talking about! Kris thinks I will become nothing more than a statistic, we'll see.
I agree with Kris....You should think twice about a bullsh!t ultralight..... Pull the trigger on the Maule, it's a hell of alot cheaper than a Ferrari.... Go for it Uncle Jessie!
With a take off like that I would only have a wife riding with once as well! The desire is there without question....sadly the budget lags far behind. A few other toys would have to find new homes prior to a purchase like that, then finding the free time to get a license....
Factory is 2 miles from my shop....Dave needs to fly down and experience the thrill of a hanger take-off...lol
Great thread, really informative for someone who may consider servicing their own vehicle. Learned a lot about the logisitcs of this service
