Any theory as to why manufacturers do not grease any electrical connections? I'm sure there is the cost aspect, I've always wondered if there is another reason. I use the stuff religiously on electrical connections.
Thats the problem, grease was used and is the swill that can be seen on the connector. Ask anyone in the industry, Aero Space, Military....NO GREASE! In this case the grease held the moisture in and against the connections and wire. You can see what is happening to the wires, imagine the connectors on them! I posted in another thread a little while back.... My father (a EE working in the Apollo program) told me of how the Apollo Command Module was having electrical gremlins and it was found to be due to condensation and greased connections. Dielectric grease has hydroscopic tendencies...give it a source of water and it does well at holding it in place. It was in the Apollo era that a change was made in the AeroSpace industry to using Gold plated connectors and assembling every thing dry crimped. Hmmm, pretty close to 40 yrs later we are getting around to follwing their lead. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry to interupt but can I ask a question? Just wondering what items to leave off the engine and wait until it's in the car to install? Air boxes, hoses, etc... BTW, my experience with grease is it makes a huge difference PREVENTING corrosion. Precious metal connectors may be a different story though...
Well that's just sooooo nice of you to tell the whole world..yikes!!!!!! That be true.......since I got rid of the female I ain't had "any" so I'd forgotten what "inney" meant. Thanks for breakin it down so I could understand. When your female goes bad you are left with no other course of action than to cut her off and throw-er away....just don't forget to replace her or you'll be like me..WITHOUT ANY "INNEY"...
Very interesting. Now that I think about it, I've never worked on a car with the engine so open to the elements like the 355. The #1 issue I have with connectors is the plastic shattering when you try and disconnect them, corrosion is secondary. I wish my cars had the nice push-to-release connectors, thankfully they are compatible with the newer style. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread
Well there is a nice unexpected BONUS! I was pulling off the muffler and bumper getting ready to install the engine and noticed it's a Tubi muffler. I had no idea.
All the belts and covers on. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Cleaned up around the gearbox. Looks much better. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just about ready to go back in. I may just do the boots later, they don't look to difficult with the engine in. I am missing some of the orange colored flangenuts from Fabspeed they send for the headers, at least I am assuming that's what they are for. They only sent me 8, enough for one side. Took the bumper off as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I really can't figure out now the high pressure power steering hose is routed. The thing is like 2 feet long and only has to reach like 10 inches. Anyone have any good pictures of that hose?
Dave, now Jets got the connectors, we gotta get him rev'd up on the boosted deal again. Pistons and liners are no big deal to him....he knows of a place to have those changed! Bruce...I feel for ya. Maybe you should go to Atlanta and get that pressure in your pipes relieved. Sean...looking good!
Sean: Everything looks really great! I just noticed that you have the older style power steering reservoir and cap. As those are very prone to deformation and cap-leakage, and you have the engine out for easy access, you may want to consider replacing it with the newer style power steering reservoir and cap. I know Ricambi has them at a reasonable price (for Ferrari parts). Sorry, not trying to "run-up the bill", but sometimes it's better to deal with these issues now, rather than later. Best, Scott
As soon as I get done with a couple of projects at the shop I'm gonna be all over the connectors. Gonna drop the motor to do it though.....If my liners are bad I'm putting in the good aftermarket stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to it... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think he is concerned it will make that chopped and channeled Caravan he has been seen with feel anemic. The ability to go like hell, stop AND turn..... has a real livestock badge on the front, not some darn reptile..... Dont be concerned he will snap out of it. Just spent a little too much time around the kerosene fumes. Spring is on the way and once again he will long for a exhaust note with a shrill scream rather than that of a pair of out-of-sinc John Deere's. He'll be fine....
Thats about all I can do with that old grey fox......as for "testing" he needs to redirect it to all those projects he's working on and LEAVE ME ALONE...lol
OH that hurt Dave Ouch, my poor reptile may be cryin the blues before it's over Until I get all of these projects under way here is what I'm doing to get a speed fix..... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Regardless Which of the great many projects we have spoken about...... My statement was based on pure uncut envy!
Thanks, after it loops does it go up and over the waterpump/power steering pump or does it thread through those somewhere. It seems like if it ran over the top it would be too high to connect. Just want to make sure it's right.
