I was at a sports car dealer today and noticed a 993 turbo on the showroom that had been advertised online for months. I asked about it and was told-

"It is now sold but it took forever because everyone wanted the engine out service done on it. Needed about 15K worth of work so we sent it out and it took a few months."

    Made me laugh :D

What! I thought 993s took care of themselves basicly cost the same as a Camry to operate. That what I read at least.
Man I do love the 993 regardless. Almost bought a white Carrera S wide body with carbon seats for 35k in 2002.

They are pretty low maintenance overall and certainly compared to an F355 though. I love my F355 and plan to keep it forever but if one of the two (993 or F355) had to go, it would be the F355. The 993 is more fun to me overall... Very subjective though and even for me it's a close race.

To be clear, I'm not bashing the 355. I agree they are terrific cars and undervalued but the 993 is just really special for me.

You must be a true enthusiast to pay the same money for a 355 as a 430.

The 430 is a better car in every aspect. But it's too big and it ugly.

I like the 360 looks better than the 430. Can't put my finger on why. When you walk up to the front of a 355/348 your compelled to say "that's a sexy b**ch" I have heard it many times. When folks walk up to the front of 430 you hear *what is it?"

The Porsche maintenance should be generally speaking be less expensive. I lived with a 1990 C2 Targa (964) for almost 15 years, which is arguably the worst year of that particular series - one before the above mentioned 993. The engine rebuild was north of $15 K about 10+ years ago, targa top rebuild (new skin) about $1.5 K. One of my close friends rebuilt his 964 engine and upgraded it the same time with really much better components and it was more in the $25K range. My 996 needed a new soft top and cost over $3k...btw the engine issues with 996 are really overblown but similarly to the 355 there is an aura of "issues" and "expensive". The really huge difference is that the acquisition cost of the 996 is closer to the legendary $25 K engine out for the 355...mine was less than $20K.
At any rate the 355 (and to me most/all old F-cars) are just magical. The 360 is still really attractive, but then once you get to the 430 it all evaporates. I have to agree that it is a way better car, but to me too big, too "loud" (look at me I am a Hollywood start effect). That said I would not refi=use a set of keys, for sure LOL

Beautiful car! Don't get me wrong, I love 993's. Just find it amusing when so many people talk about 355 values in relation to maintenance as if other 90's sports cars are immune to repair bills.
