Yes it can be replaced. You basically open/cut the chain and join the old and new chain together. You can then pull the old chain which will "route" the new one. Note that: 1) once this is done, all the camshaft timing has to be adjusted, which is the costly part. 2) you cannot change the chain tensioner with this merhod, so you end up with a new chain with old tensioner. PM me if you need an explanation in French...
Thanks for the answer ! How Can I be sure that I have to replace it or if adjust it using the tensioner is anought ?
On the 400i generation 1, you know the chain is done once the tensioner stud/nut do sit flush against the timing chest without delivering the proper 10kg tension if you try to pull the chain 1cm. I would suggest to fully read the "timing" section of the Workshop Manual where this is comprehensively described.
The chain tensioner is visible from the top with the cam cover removed. It has hard rubber molded on top of metal. If you are down to metal it needs to be replaced. How much or little rubber is acceptable?? Ken
The tensioner allows for adjustment, first see how much thread the adjuster is showing. I can take a picture of it if you need. Sent from my MAR-LX1M using Tapatalk
