Apropos of nothing at all, I was amazed to see just how similar are the 550 and the 365 GTC/4 in profile. I am sure I am not the first to notice this, but I have never seen any reference to it in articles / discussions about the design of the 550, which more usually seems to attract comparison with the GTC/4's more celebrated sibling the 365 GTB/4. While I can see elements of the B/4 in the 550, I see more of the C/4.

I think the direct side shot emphasizes the shared shape of the rear side glass more than anything else. Other angles show the Kamm tail design shared by the Daytona and 550. Definitely see elements of both cars in the 550's design.

On the profile, I see a combination of 275 GTB below the window line and C4 C Pillar and tapered quarterpanel.
From the front, I see a combination of 275 GTB and Lusso.

There is a book on the 550 that goes into some detail on the design evolution of the 550, including early Pininfarina drawings. I have it buried somewhere if you are interested in publishing details.

Owning both a 550 and a 456, I’ve always found the 550 more echoing of the 275 GTB (including lensed headlights, side gills, rear fender bulges, more vertical Kamm tail) while the 456 echoes the 365 GTB/4 Daytona (pop up headlights, reversed dual hood scoops in non-M guise, lower angle of the rear side window sloping up, Kamm tail that slopes rearward).

That’s right... what determines pop-up vs ‘behind the lenses’ headlights in the Daytona?
