Points are a pain and the new replacement ones that are currently available are total junk. Anyone who drives their Dino should consider switching to an electronic ignition with no mechanical points. There are a LOT of threads on this here and it is a wonderful upgrade. In addition I would suggest fitting a gear reduction starter. Again lots of threads here on the subject and it is a massive improvement in cranking speed and reliability.

this seems to be the case

it is making me feel great about the non start issue and rough idle

i will report back this weekend

    when i take it out

hopefully it will start right up and idle well etc

i had already started thinking about an electric ignition

glad to know there are threads on here that walk me through it

Great pics. I’m interested to hear if the car still does the backfire thing after the points were cleaned. Please let us know.

so I wnet to this Enzo Ferrari 50th B'day thing at the Peterson Museum in LA

it was a perfectly fine event

i felt there was way too many common cars and NON Ferraris

as I did not get placement near the main cars

they gave 3 awards - and I wasn't interested in the awards

I just didn't love having to leave my car in a dark corner and walk away to see the other cars

I had my tools and jack and books in the trunk and felt very nervous about walking away

    all that aside

I had a great time chatting with ROB

who found me - he is Nuvolari here on F-Chat

he is the man who wrote that epic post about starting these cars etc.

he loves up to the Canadien Stereotype - he is incredibly nice

and his knowledge of these cars is very very very deep

    we should have taken pics

    I did not

    Rob may have -

also - the back fire issue remains far less than ut was when my points were gunked

but it still remains but at a very tolerable level

I have been starting the car with no issue and the idle has been steady at 1500

my only lil issue now is

when I left the show I wanted to let the car warm up as i drove away in the city traffic

knowing the once I hit the canyons near my house

I wanted to push the car a little

when i got to some open roads and begin to wind the car up

when i got to 5500 RPM's the car started to cough a little

literally sounding like it needed to clear its throat

so the next time i got up to 5500 RPM's and it did it agin - I pushed in the clutch and revved - hooping to get a throat clearing pop

I did not get that pop

i continued to cruise - no issues up to the coffee shop near me - so now the car is perfect

    starts great - idles great

cruises light to light - no problem - growls perfectly

    the new issue

is at 5500 RPM's and over - it hesitates and bucks a little

    Neelfryer-

Your backfiring problem might be your CDI system. I just got finished installing a retrofitted Winterburn CDI in my dino pictured. I had really bad backfiring, unsuspecting anything wrong. The performance is incredible with the new CDI and no backfiring. I would highly recommend looking into replacing your worn out CDI and coil with a new one.
    Your car nice color.

+1 on the Winterburn CDI! I started my Dino on Sunday after weeks of sitting. Fired right up without hesitation. I have the stock points system on my car. Ran well with the stock DCNF carbs (with the typical issues) but runs superb on the Stratos IDF induction!

Everyone should realize, a backfiring dino is not acceptable. The car should not backfire!! I own my dino from new. The original MM unit I replaced after 4-5 years of use in the 70s. The Delta MarkC seemed to improve performance back the car always backfired, told it was normal, wrong!!
On Tuesday I replace the old Mark C with a new retrofitted Winterburn unit and the car has been transformed. Faster starting from cold, much more pep and high end speed and remarkably no backfiring. NO BACKFIRING! I mean none. Amazing. FYI

Really pretty basic. If your system is still stock (wiring, connector, coils, distributor etc), you just need to put the correct connector end to the wires on the Winterburn unit and it’ll plug right in. Fred Winterburn can help you with a wiring schematic etc. Great thing is you can also use the emergency coil with this system. Works as stock only better.

Do you guys think this is the best path to upgrading the ignition ? I remember another thread about this last year where the new parts were fitted inside the original silver box.

It is also possible to install the electronics inside the Dinoplex housing and look totally stock. There’s a great debate out there about converting to an optical trigger or keep it stock points. The guys I eventually listened to race, tour and restore vintage race cars. They all encouraged me to keep the ignition with points. They pointed out that it is easier to trouble shoot when out on the road if there’s an ignition issue.

If I wanted to go to the ultimate step I would do what Kevin O’Rourke of Mototechnique did, TBI and crank fire ignition.

Really plug and play. I am no mechanic, but am game for a go. After talking with Fred Winterburn, (who by the way is very knowledgeable about such things and did not disappoint) I felt capable of doing the job. It was exactly as described by him, plug and play. My car wiring was OEM. We had the color coded diagrams of the wires, components and wahla success. Started right up, both the CDI and the emergency coil work. You should give Fred a call to discuss, I do not have anything to do with Fred, just am a very satisfied dino owner. Fred 519-395-3483. You won't be disappointed. Good luck.
