My wife and I are seriously considering moving to Oahu this year after our second child is born. My wife is born and raised in Honolulu and her parents are still there. The purpose would be to take care of her parents, and my wife to stop working to take care of our two young daughters with the grandparents. We would be living with her parents in a house designed for generational living like many are on the island. This would actually be better for us financially considering housing and childcare costs we are incurring in Seattle are greater than my wife's income which we would lose. The difference is greater than how much I would expect for my income to decrease on the island.

The big issue for me is my F355 and storage. I need to have a plan for that as well as a plan for servicing it. There is a garage at the house we would be living in but I do not expect to have personal use of it. We would be in one of the valley's near downtown right off the Pali Highway.

What are the options for exotic car storage on Oahu?

How many options are there for servicing a F355, specifically a major 30k engine out service?

Hey, bcb70 just moved here with his 355. I would try to touch base with him via PM. You can also PM sowest about your choices. He is an indy here that works on Ferraris but I am not sure which models he prefers. There are a few 355's here so there is an answer.

Thanks for the leads Kevin. I have actually met Larry and spent a few hours at his shop talking old cars with him last time I was on the island. I'm sure he could do basic maintenance but I didn't see any room to drop a F355 engine in his shop. Does JN service exotics?

Hey Steve. I had a 355 that was serviced at JN Exotics. Aron is the chief Ferrari, Lamborghini mechanic there and he's absolutely great. He's also a real car buff so it's fun just talking story about cars with him.
Hope to see you when you get here!

I would also carefully consider having the baby here if you think that you guys might live out your days here. Your child might qualify for special programs and incentives later in life if native born. I may be wrong about the financials but there seems to be a split line in social circles between those who were born here vs those who were not and if there is Hawaiian blood involved I think it makes even more sense. Good luck!

Thanks, I plan on getting in contact with him once things become more concrete. We will have to make the decision in the next month or two for a planned move in the summer.

I am pretty excited to meet some fellow Fcar nuts once there. It seems like a pretty close nit group and really, I won't know many people beyond my wife's family so meeting like minded enthusiasts will definitely be the way to go.

That is an interesting thought about having the next baby on the island. I'm not sure how logistically possible that would be though. Flights are already all booked for the inlaws to be in Seattle for a couple months right after the birth and then we will (all of us) go back to Hawaii for a couple weeks in May/June.

My wife is well aware of (and me as well by now) of the prejudices that are present on the island. My inlaws have been on Oahu since the late 50's and early 60's so they know their way around and what not to do and where not to go. I've been 6 times in the past 5 years and have never had a bad experience beyond some rude people here and there. My wife starts talking local very quickly when we go back so that helps.

I love the Aloha spirit and am ready in life to just slow down and do everything on island time. So much less stressful.

Life is kinda boring here as there isn't much to do when you want to get away. We really don't have places to go for a nice challenging drive.

It sounds like you will be living in Nuuanu. It is very lush there, but that is because it rains a lot. Perhaps your in-laws will let you build an addition to the garage?

Yup, Nuuanu. Wonderful location. Private, quiet, trade winds right off the golf course. It does rain often right in there. Very beautiful area.

Boring is right down my alley. Cars are my only hobby I really have left with the little ones taking over. Just want to slow down and enjoy raising a family somewhere there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy. I don't need much.

I don't think a garage addition would be an option. At least not right away. Long term maybe but I wouldn't count on it. By the time it would be an option my father in law would no longer be with us and that in itself would free up the garage for my use.

    Aloha Steve,
Congrats on coming back to the island.
I think Larry and JN are the only Ferrari mechanics on Oahu. I've spent a lot of time talking to Larry but never really asked about a engine out service. Your right about the shop, not a lot of room but Larry is very knowledgable. I'll ask him when I see him next.
I recently moved to Oahu from San Diego and had my engine out service done before shipping the car over. I wanted the peace of mind that the major maintenance was done before getting here.
As far as storage, I haven't been able to find any. I found a condo to rent that has sufficient parking, not perfect but good.
I'm always around if you need help with anything. Look forward to meeting you.

    Brian

There is another mechanic that works on Ferraris. His name is Creighton Wong and he owns European Auto Specialists, behind Porsche of Hawaii. I was at a dinner with some friends and one of the guys bought a 360 in Texas and had Creighton do a timing belt, water pump and a couple other things. He was happy with the work.

I personally have not used Creighton, but have had a couple 930s he worked on. One was a disaster of an engine rebuild, the other is my current 77 930. The current car is fine as it was cared for by the previous owner. The rebuild car was severely neglected by the PO and required lots of sorting. There was an oil leak 2k into the rebuild that required an engine drop. I had my mechanic do the work and we went with a fresh rebuild to address some issues.

Just to throw a curve ball into your plans....

Where were you planning on sending your kids to school? The public elementary schools in town aren't exactly the greatest and the better k-12 private schools cost $15-20K per year. Yeah, that how much they charge starting from kindergarten.

I suggest you check with the Oahu school system on where your kids will be attending public school.

In another life, I used to be a DOE administrator. In Nuuanu, the elementary schools would be Maemae, Nuuanu or Pauoa, and they are fine. Pauoa might be a little rough and tumble as you may get the Papakolea kids. The middle schools in that complex are not the greatest and I would start searching for private schools at that point.

That is kind funny you brought it up. I could see the school system being a big hurdle for nearly anyone moving to the island with a family. I have so many advantages with my family an in-laws. My wife came up through the private school system on Oahu and has worked in the private school system here in Seattle since graduating college. My mother in law taught in private school on Oahu for her entire adult life prior to retiring a couple years ago. The education path and schools are all they have been talking about the past days. That is COVERED!

Did your wife go to a school that starts with a P? If she graduated between 81-86, I may know her.

Close, the one that starts with I. We are in our mid 30's so we are late 90's graduation. Seems like this is the age that many start to return to the island after starting a family on the main land. Many of her friends are talking about returning, just returned or wishing they could afford to return now.

Thanks Brian! I am contemplating having the major done right before the move as well. There will be so many things to handle of the next 9 months that what I think is best and what actually ends up happening might not be same thing. So far mother in law is out of her mind ecstatic about us moving back and father in law is luck warm about the idea and possibly a little uninterested in change in his life. He always is though so not much worry about that. We will see how it plays out. The plan is September at this point.

Storage still seems elusive at this point.

Ahhh, she went to the other school. lol

You are right, I had many friends return to start a family at that age. Others stayed on the mainland, and wished to return home, but leaving their jobs on the mainland would have meant a large pay cut.

Are any of you asthmatic? The air in Nuuanu is usually good, but when we get voggy weather, it is all over the island. I just load up on antihistamines.

A brief update. Things have been moving along as expected. We are 100% committed to moving at this point. My informed her employer she is not coming back after maternity leave. The dog quarantine same day release process has been started. Preschool research is in full swing (both wife and mother in law). We have started selling stuff and downsizing stuff.

I have also decided that I am very interested in making the jump from employee to owner/partner/employer when we move to the island. I am very excited and am searching for opportunities to buy a business or partner with an existing business. Any leads are appreciated. My skill set is accounting/business admin/financial analysis but am open to learn just about all aspects of a given business or industry.

    Oh what a change.

Is there a code or special rule that you can't spell out the complete names of private schools?

No. It is just that many people don't like the school I went to because they consider it to be a school for rich white kids, which it hasn't been in many, many years. Ironically, our most famous graduate is Barack Obama.

Exciting stuff Steve! Without island based contacts you may find it tough to hit the ground running with regard to business; at least the way you are describing it. My advice would be to seek out groups and organizations now that you can join and get the introductions going. It seems like the fast track to success is to take the slow road down volunteer boards or groups/projects, then once you get a social/professional net in place you will be able to stand on your own. If you are of generous means already joining the right clubs might be a good option. There is golf of course but I would suggest Canoe Paddling (If you are in town, Outrigger Canoe Club, Windward Side try Lanikai or Kailua Clubs) This is still not a fast, hit the ground running option but if you are going to live in Hawaii, you will want to live a long life and to do that you will need to exercise. You can make a lot of friends in these pursuits too and that is where your future business opportunities will be.

    EDIT...IMHO of course ;)
