Here is the Porsche 906 mentioned in Pete's post #23 above, picture taken from C&SC June 2003. The caption does indicate that the car will be rebuilt.

The knockoffs on those things are huge, not the pretty little Borrani things you see on street cars. I wonder why Amon didn't just whack it off with a big ol' French roadside rock?

    You have been dudded!
That wizened old French gentleman with the metal detector is a close friend of my wife's French cleaning lady's 3rd cousin & I regret to advise you that he has been replicating historical hammer heads for 40 years now.
The authentication police therefore have no hesitation in rejecting your claim!
Sorry to advise you of this

Is the video of 0846 at Le Mans 1967 burning available on line anywhere?

Damn....when i first read about the accident i thougt the whole car had burst into flames and only a couple of tubes remained!!!...By those pictures most of the car was intact , if Ferrari decided not to recuperate it was probably because it would take too long to revover the whole car and have it running as new, instead it was probably easyer to simply build another car since thay probably already had the parts for it....this certanly did not mean that with time and patiente the car could not be totaly rebuilt, as Jim proved many years later.

Hmmm...I wonder if the hammer head was a matching S/N?

    Great pictures. Any more?

Link to Video would be interesting.

Doesn't look too bad to me.

If it was listed on Copart as a salvage I'd take it on.

As long as there's not flood damage. Don't want to take on a flood damaged car.

Wonder if that rule of thumb applies to fire hoses?

I'm still hoping the race fan who snagged it will send it to me. That actually happened with my MK-IV. When the tail blew off at Le Mans a hunk cracked off and a fan grabbed it. 40 years later the guy who wound up with it graciously gave it back to me. I'll snap photo of the piece tomorrow. It's great because it shows just how violent and messy endurance racing actually is. Bruce McLaren grabbed most of the tail and got it back to the pits where it was duct taped back together and soldiered on to 4 OA.

Fires often look a lot worse than they are.

We were racing 8 minutes after this one and went on to finish First in Class and Win The FIA Alternate Energy Cup.

I guess in period it was not worth Ferrari rebuilding a car coming to the end of its racing career, that had been fire damaged as shown in the photos, but far from beyond resurrection though in reality based on those pics.

I bet if the car had been much newer then it would have been back in action pretty quickly.

    Jim,

I am astounded at your patience. You continually come under fire and always graciously answer repeated attacks on you and 0846. I've read every post on F-Chat about 0846 and still shake my head at the continued debate. My hat is off to you.

... and she looks just fantastic ;-)

Consumed by fire? Really? Badly damaged ok. Discarded because it wasn't worth rebuilding, maybe, but because it was too damaged or they were already moving on….
