Thanks for the info Murph. 512BBi...on my gotta have list.
Steve, that "A" model. Is that the one that's resto was held up a couple of years finding a canopy? Also isn't it a one and only? Are there any "B's" left?
This is Jerry Gabes ABD. That is, A model fwall forward with Allison engine, B model fuselage and D wing. This airfrane....or badly wrecked airframe was found by John Paul in Alaska. I mean up in a ball. He recovered it and moved it on to Moon Spillers of somewhere in the land of Totoville mid west. He restored it as it now is and sold it to Jerry. It resides at Hollister. There are only two true B models remaining. One is with Kermit Weeks collection in Florida. The other is with Stephen Gray in England. The Weeks machine was the former mount of famed movie stunt pilot Paul Mantz and flew in several trans-con air races in the 40's. He and Frank Tallman had Talmantz Aviation in LA. Mantz was killed in the original Flight of the Phoenix movie. Tallman went on to to do Catch 22 and a whole bunch of other productions. Whew........arent you glad you asked?
Absolutely correct, DJ. They didn't have the casting, forging, or machining capability in 1913 when most rotary engines were designed so they locked the crankshaft in place on a heavy firewall called the ternplate and let the engine rotate about the crankshaft to cool the cylinders. You are refering to the ol' Fignuton law of motion where every force will have an equal and opposite force. So that 600 pounds spinning around at 1200 RPM in one direction will produce an opposite roll in the other direction. Hence the Sopwith Camel could almost meet itself going in the opposite direction one way but couldn't turn in the other. Killed a lot of fledgling pilots. The fuel and castor oil was fed through the hollow crankshaft which ended in the cockpit where the carburetor was located along with the castor oil pump. I helped to operate the Nieuport 17 and the Avro 504 replica's for the Canadians at the 1967 Abottsford Airshow because they couldn't find anyone who knew how to hand prop an airplane or to prime a rotary. man, did we have fun at that show ! DJ was there.
Thanks I sort of followed or educated myself on Tallmans and Mantz's carreers. Too bad about how both met their makers. Brings to mind another question. How many 51's of all models still around, either airworthy or can become airworthy (short of complete refabrication)? It's interesting out of all those B's made that there only 2 left. Guess they went to making a lot of pots and pans.
I'm awfully sorry Henry, but if you cant afford a Ferrari, you cant afford my daughter. Just reading that into your profile.
Hell, I dont know. The word on the street is that there is 125-150 in the US. Another 30 or so in the free world (what does that mean anymore). More than likely there another 15-20 being rebuilt in US. There is supposted to be 100 51,s at Lee Lauderbacks Mustang roundup in June 06 at Stead. Should be quite a show. Lots of flying and all that junk. You need to go.
If I'm alone I'll take a scooter, if we both come maybe we'll take the white hotrod but I'll be there. I just have to see how you get all those dollar bills into a fuel tank. Funny, the exhaust on one of those things doesn't smell at all like burning money.
Exhaust smells good. Av gas has always smelled good. Garrage temp up to 60...thats my cue. Gotta get that left rear together so I can stert the right. Jeese, have a torque wrench thats 5ft long. C UH...ss
How about another airplane pix for the ferrari chat channel? And inversly, another Ferrari for aviator chat. Sortta like a parallel universe.......We'll drive Lay mad. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's been awful quiet around here. I hope it's because you are still scrubbing the underside of the "mistress" in preparation for spring...................
No scrub. TRster is back together, but still have lots of ice in driveway. Cant get out. I'l give it a try Sat. It was 6 deg this am. And you think you live in the outback. Ya otta see this place. All of my grass is frosty white. Crunchy gravel in the driveway. Lows in the 20's every night. Doing a little ice skating in the Jimmy last night on the way home from work. Clear, sunny and COLD during the day. With luck I will be pulling the carbs off the 308 for rebuild if my presence isn't required elsewhere this holiday.
A few pix of finished left rear wheel area. Same old gunk anti rust or whatever it is stuff covers everything. Fan is left rad cooling unit. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
