I think the Levante was never really properly engineered to be something special. It was pushed into production without a lot of thought. Maserati needed a SUV and they coughed one up using parts they had. The Alfa Giulia was a clean sheet design WITH the idea that it would be used in multiple platforms like an SUV. It's no surprise its better -- and I would certainly hope so.

The Levante IS a well engineer vehicle, its development delay and that of the Giulia can be directly related to the demotion of then Maserati/Alfa Director Harald Wester. The fact that the Levante hasn’t reached sales expectations is related to cultural clashes between Detroit and Italy.

I really liked my Levante (although I believe the Stelvio is the better car). Re the disappointing sales numbers, Maserati messed up the launch - performance version coming 3 years after the intro, selling diesel only in some markets at the same time as diesel is dying. Concerned they are left behind by BMW, Merc and Porsche in this segment....

I guess what I mean by "poorly engineered to be something special" is that it ended up just another SUV with Maserati clothes. It didn't excite the public like a Maserati should.

And, that may have been too much Detroit, not enough Italy.

11 days on a family vacation in a Stelvio QF

    https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/08/1160-miles-in-11-days-a-grand-tour-with-the-alfa-romeo-stelvio-quadrifoglio/

Would I want to do another epic road trip in a Stelvio Quadrifoglio? Most definitely. Other SUVs do better in the comfort and cargo departments. But nothing I have reviewed offers regular hits of driving bliss like this Alfa. [That's because I hog all the really good stuff—Ed.] For an SUV, it is incredibly responsive to even your smallest impulse behind the wheel. The engine and exhaust has been tuned like a symphony orchestra—a sonorous roar punctuated by occasional percussive bursts. The interior is suitably forward-looking, with carbon fiber accents and stitched leather, and the exterior styling hints at the power under the hood.

If you want an SUV that delivers a quiet, sedate ride, look elsewhere. The same advice goes for someone looking for loads of cargo space and some serious off-roading. If you're a fan of Italian styling, fast driving, and sublime handling—and you're in the market for an SUV—this is the car for you. Best of all, it's a true Alfa. This is a completely different beast than the 1982 Spider I used to drive, but it has all of the ineffable qualities that cause some petrolheads to continually fall head over heels for Alfa Romeo. After a second rendezvous with this Alfa, I can safely say it's the kind of car I'd want on a road trip of any length.

While I didn’t get the QF version, he pretty much sums up why I got my Stelvio. If you have to have a CUV/SUV you could do worse.

He pretty much nailed it. I agree with most of his comments. While I don't have the QFolio, you still get a lot of bang for the buck.

Objectively, the Stelvio would make more sense for me than the Giulia, but it would have to be a Quad. :)

    While I don't disagree, 80K v 45K ;)
The QFolio here in Michigan winters also doesn't make a lot of sense for me. That's the reason I finally got rid of my ATS V Coupe.

Good to see that the sales are staying strong and increasing slightly. I am seeing more of them around Dallas. Same with the Giulia.

I just picked up a new Stelvio QF. I love it. This cars is fun. The engine is incredible. It is a lot of car for the money. The latest review says this car goes 0-60 in 3.3 seconds and I believe them. The engine is a Ferrari 488 engine with two cylinders removed. The engine code is F154. It is a 2.9 liter twin turbo 90 degree V6. What was the last Ferrari turbo charged 2.9 liter?

It was a rainy day a couple of months ago and just to kill some time I went to check the Stelvio at the local dealer.
I had seen a grey one on the road and thought it may deserve a better look.
I ended up leasing a Stelvio Sport Rosso Alfa.
At first I had to adjust to it as I was coming from a Durango R/T with a V8, but now I love it !!
The dynamics of this vehicle are something else: it may look like an SUV, but it really drives like a car .. make that better than many cars !!
It is fast, agile and looks good inside and out.
It gets noticed it and peopel ask all kind of questions about it

The Maserati Levante is kind of porky in my opinion; they could have done a better job with her lines.
For 2019 they finally realized she needed a V8
