Looks like my alternator is on the fritz. I searched the alternat parts thread and got this:

"The equivalent alternator to the stock Ferrari... NiponDenso listed as for a "John Deere Marine Engine" is not a total Plug and Play replacement...some modification was required.

1)The small alternator mounting flange is threaded, and the hole not large enough to accommodate the tension pin, that rides in the curved slot, and needed to be drilled out.
    2) The pulley installed on the alternator is slightly wider in diameter and width. Not an apparent issue. The grooves of the drive pulley and A/C compressor pulley guide the belt in the exact center of the alternator pulley, with a slight gap on either side.

Installed the unit last night with the minor drill out modification and all worked well.
A big savings over Ferrari ($840.00 vs $113 delivered brand new)"

I see the alternator online, has anyone gutted this replacement and swapped the parts to the ferrari case or swapped the pulley to the correct one? I could just rebuild mine, but it is cheaper and less work to swap the front housing....

The case is the same. The only thing needed was to enlarge the bolt hole slightly for the long bolt that fastens to the block frame.

I installed this very unit without even swapping the pulley....works like a charm and is a huge cost savings.

Mine was installed professionally but failed in a few months.
Went back to OEM and no issues.

Your mileage may vary etc etc

I also installed the John Deere Marine engine 101211-7780, costed me $110 at Amazon (made in China :( ). Not sure how long it will last. But I also took the OE alternator to the local specialist to rebuild it, uprated to 175 amp (from OE 140 amp). The specialist claimed that they used the top quality components to rebuild, costed me $175 ($1 per amp :). See my pictures. The old one was totally shot, perhaps because of oil leaking into the component (according to the alternator specialist).

    Old vs. New:

Need to drill out the thread to fit bolt:

So how many miles or kilometers have you guys got out of your alternstors? Mine is on 137.500 kms. now and I believe it is the original one. When I bought the car in 2013, it had 73.000 kms. and an alternator should be able to lat that long. I have never had any trouble with it...

I was not as lucky as you. I only got 33.6k miles out of it. But it is over 20 years old.

Btw, I want to share that after the alternator malfunctioned, it caused all kind of problems. It shot my new battery. And I had to follow the procedures to reset the systems a couple times: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/456-m-gta-obdii-code-p600-asr-transmission-light-on.335054/ special thanks to @nigelthomas1310

The alternator was the first problem I had with my 550. An oil leak from the rh cam cover went into the alternator and killed the regulator. Anything over 5k rpm it overcharged and lit the dashboard up like a Christmas tree. I replaced it and had the old one rebuilt. It's on the shelf in my garage if anybody needs one.

Exactly like my situation. I got christmas tree as well and almost stalled my car (both engine & transmission ecu behaved weird). Thanks for sharing. History Repeating!

Mark, I replaced mine about ten years ago and works well. I believe the oil leak from AC unit is the responsible cause for out alternators to go bad. Mean while I have to change the voltage regulator too to mach the Ferrari, i do not remember exactly I needed or not.

I fashioned a shield over my alternator which has served me well. The compressor puked fluid but the shield saved the day.

The heat the alternator generates is tremendous that is why they have ventilation duct , either it can melt the shield or melt surrounding structures. it happened to me,

Resurrecting. Does anyone have a good
Contact for a place that will repair the oem denso alternator? I’ve replaced with the marine version but not sure how long it will last. I also had the cam cover on my 456m leak oil onto the oem alternator and likely fry it. I’m in columbus OH and not one place seems to exist here that will rework alternators. Thanks community! Ed

I bought a new one for my 456GT from eurospares in the UK a couple years ago. It wasn’t that expensive maybe $400-500.

I have an OEM alternator rebuilt by a local pro alternator shop, new electronic components and new paint. If you need it, send me a message.
