One useless thing I learned while growing up: If you want to write in grass, use citronella lamp oil, like you put in tiki torches. It takes a few days to kill the grass, but when it does nothing will grow where you pour it for several YEARS.

Save up all of your green waste, recycling and regular waste (nothing with your name or address on it) and utilize their containers instead of yours.

Kinda like the community chest. That way, a day or two before pickup when they find their receptacle full of someone elses lawn clippings............

And you can use your own beautiful clean bins for things like topsoil, mulch, or even birdseed if you prefer. A win win deal if I ever saw one. Jam them babies full full full!!!!

P.S. We've got the same system here and there are a few folks that aren't always good about putting them back the same day. My next door neighbour is an elderly widow who used to forget so I now just run them out for her and put them back when I do mine. Plus, having lots of extra waste I get to use the top half of hers.

I know a house where the owner made the front yard into a jungle, complete with a real broken 15-20 ft sailboat 'wrecked' on the 'island' for his kids to play in. I'm sure HIS neighbors love the resulting rise in property values!

    I just saw this tread.

I had the same problem a few years ago with a neighbor's trash cans.

There should be a telephone # on the container which will connect you to the sanitation dept. If you call them, they will send someone out to determine if the containers are being left out illegally. If they are, the sanitation agent will either speak to them on the spot or write a letter.

You may have a problem though. It looks like they leave them on the parkway. The City may consider that section private property and will not take action.

In my situation, the neighbor was on the board of the HOA.

I wouldnt approach them about it unless the city advises you that they are not in violation.

Has anyone thought of just calling as the HOA admin or something along those lines politely asked him to move the trash cans to avoid fees?

For most homeowners, any question beginning "am I being too anal?" usually is answered in the affirmative.

Worry about mortgage rates. Worry about earthquakes. Worry about burning mice running into the house. ;) But the trash bins sitting out front? Pfah.

Oh, and on the "anal" department: I notice that your neighbor keeps his bins on the curb, while you have yours out in the road in the way of traffic. Shame on you! :D

Take those big wheels off his trash cans (why do they need big wheels if they don't move?) And get a few cheap boat anchors, tie them to each trash can and stick the pointy end in the guys yard :)

Maybe the guy grew up in a mobile home or trailer park? (take the wheels off, and tie it down)

You could use those six wheels to build the guy a cart so he can wheel his trash out to the street where his cans live :)

Just steal the trash cans. They'll get upset about having to replace them, and will end up putting them in a secure place, away from the street. :)

I was going to suggest something similar. Get a long, thick chain and loop it through the handle of each can can so that the lids won't move and the bins are all bound together. Finish the job with the lock of your choice.

    -----OR...

Impersonate your neighbors by calling the sanitation dept. "Uh, yes, City Sanitation? We'll be relocating out of state this weekend and would like to notify you that we'll no longer need our waste bins. Yes, you can pick them up immediately."

I was thinking the same thing. Just keep taking them. When they order new ones, take them again. Soon, they will stop leaving their cans on the street. Or, they will call authorities, set up bait cans, and arrest you next time you try it. Then you will be publically humiliated on TV.

I would just address them politely about the problem. But address them like: Me and the other neighbors have been discussing this issue...blah, blah...we have all came to a decision, unfortunatley I am in charge of bringing this problem to your attention....ask them why the cans are always out...tell them they have to go. It would work and not bring tension between you two because it was a "neighborhood decision." Unless they often associate with everyone, I wouldn't worry too much. Or, if they catch on, tell them that no one if going to admit the truth to their faces, thats why they put you in charge of brining it to their attention.

Hey, this is coming from a guy who had to deal with a neighbor with two sea-doo's, two motorcycles, two SUV's, three cars, one truck, a RV, parked in front of my house, on his lawn, in front of other people's houses, etc.

Critical thinking is key. Go in with a gameplan. VICTORY!

That's rediculous that your HOA will allow that. We got a citation in the mail the other day for mine being visible from the road. It's hidden behind a bush and you catch just a slight glimpse of the corner of it as you drive past.

I know this is an old thread, but I have to vent a bit too. As unsightly as they are at least they actually use the trash cans. Our white trashy neighbors do have one trash can which they do use...but there are I think 8 people living there (at last count). So, it fills up and overflows within a day or two and will sit there in front of the house for most of the week filling up even more each day until they finally take it the additional 10' to the curb to be collected (which is done several times per week as in most communities). This is in addition to the 5-10 old bicycles, broken toys, and old broken Christmas decorations strewn about the front yard all of which have been laying there for weeks or months on end. The back of the house is 10x worse and not even worth getting my blood boiling about. Talk about "There goes the neighborhood" and ruining real estate values...they single handedly farked the whole neighborhood in no time flat. So if you want I'll trade ya neighbors anytime. :D
