Many years ago 1sqn (F-111) and 77sqn (Mirages) were operating out of Darwin and both sets of ground crew thought they were the most recalcitrant in the RAAF so we would do things to try and prove who was worse.

As the airfield was fully operational during operation Pitch Black we would tow aircraft all over the place for engine run ups , compass swings, etc and naturally you would have to contact the tower for clearance if you were crossing the strip.

The 77 boys were bored and thought they'd upset the tower but towing a Mirage across the strip all night and asking for clearnace to annoy ATC ..... but instead of getting annoyed I heard the following conversation on about the third or fourth time they crossed the strip:

77sqn : tower this is 77sqn with aircraft in tow requesting permission to cross the strip
ATC : [singing] 77, cross the strip [singing]

Seemed funny at the time (if you remember the 60s show Sunset Strip) because it's normally very serious and even 77 sqn didn't flaunt the rules of the base procedures

 

Jetwash an issue for aircraft smaller than your Swiss job ?

 

Yes definitely. At Jandakot we are only allowed to park in a certain spot and face a certain way, so the exhaust points away from all the lighties.
This was a PITA once while I was there because the tailwind component was too high for engine start.
I had to get an engineer to tow the aircraft to another spot that was more into wind before I could start it.

You'd be pretty silly to taxi too close behind it in a lightie, too. The jet-blast is pretty strong even from a small jet like ours.

 

I pointed an F-111 into the Fremantle Doctor one afternoon and cranked up the ADC to see what airspeed we would get and it read close enough to 140kph it didn't matter , and this was fairly normal we were told

Is Maroochy an international Airport with customs and Immigration Karen? I thought it was a domestic Airport…Pax flights are out of Brisbane and Freight out of Wellcamp as the farmers have struck a deal with customs and Immigration there….

 

We have passenger flights to NZ at certain times of the year, but I was of the understanding that the new runway was mostly for freight to get direct exports as per Wellcamp (and relieve pressure on Bne) but just wondering if anything is actually happening?

 

Not anything that I know of Karen…The International flying has been decimated by COVID so at this stage most international airports can cope with existing traffic…Once things pickup watch this space!…
