You have to understand that in those days he was travelling 300 days a year, mainly between London and the mines in Nigeria, Chad, Pakistan and Iran but also stuff he was doing in Burma Cambodia and Laos. It made sense at the time. Mind you, it wasn't new, he bought it from a guy in Iran. He was doing his best to be a BTC in those days.

Ah!, that’s something indeed, he must have had some energy about him, my father traveled extensively for work when I was younger, it was always a real treat to see him when he got back from his adventures [emoji4]

It knocked it out of him, he was dead by 60 and I hardly knew him. It took me years to realise that the life we lead wasn't normal. There were always people staying when he was home, we had guys from JPL, a couple of Hollywood movie producers, Ernest Borgnine and his wife stayed for a couple of weeks. Heck, even the guy who designed the cargo doors on the DC10 hid out at our place for the best part of a year after the Paris crash. There was some upside - I got to play golf with Pele and tennis against Jimmy Connors on the court in our backyard. As I said, trying his best to be a BTC - amazing how coups and revolutions can ruin that..

Great memories I’m sure, I’m sorry to hear you didn’t get to know him and can relate, It’s funny, my dads 88 and I’ve only really got to know him in the last 10 years, now he’s finally slowed down, I find it fascinating listening to him talk about the 2nd world war and living in Salford in Manchester as a kid collecting shrapnel from the street from the previous nights bombing raids, he would do his maths by candlelight, it was the maths that got him a degree in industrial chemistry and a way out of the slums [emoji574]️

There was much more than that, musicians and the like but they were the ones who interested me. Like most people my age i have developed an interest in my family history and there are a huge number of things I wish I could have asked him, and my mum for that matter, that I should have known as a kid.

It sounds like a fascinating childhood, it's interesting you mention about developing that interest in family history & things you wished you asked him, I can relate to that. We led a humble life as I was growing up, my Dad was very stoic, not one to complain & didn't volunteer much about how he was feeling or his life before us. We knew he came out from England with his family of 9 when he was 14, that his father lost his business, along with everything in the depression & it wasn't until after he died that I found out they were very well off financially in England & lived a very comfortable life, yet when they arrived in Australia he had to go to work permanently from age 14 to help support the family, he worked in a factory here all his life until retirement. To his credit he was never a sad or bitter man, however I was closer to my Mum, she was much more emotionally in touch with us on a daily basis, sadly I wasn't as close to my Dad as I realise I am with my own children, perhaps a generational thing, I wish now I had known more & been able to ask him about his life before us.

Yep, you find interesting things. My dad was kicked out of home in Sydney when he was 12 a few weeks before WW2 began. By the time he was 13 he was cutting cane at Tully and I think generally had a wretched time and didn't talk much of it. I had a close relationship with my mother (she died 7 years ago) but recently learned I had 13 great aunts and uncles who lived all their lives in the district who my sisters and I knew nothing about. Half the kids I went to school with were cousins and she didn't say a word and I am left wondering what happened.

I wish my dad had put pen to paper - there were a lot of wild stories: when he was buying stones in Cambodia and Laos it was during the war, often doing business while they were fighting it out in the street. The Americans took him in and out. Burma was closed in those days so he had heroin smugglers bring him over the border from Thailand. That was the life he lived.

So to our pilots on here, I just watched the old movie "Sully" directed by Clint Eastwood about the miraculous landing of the US jet on the Hudson River back in 2009 & every person was saved. Seems like they tried to blame it on Sully at first, thank goodness the truth came out... great movie.

What to our resident pilots think of that event after the fact?

Pete it’s a pretty true representation of the process…In a Nutshell he had a lot of previous experience to lean on ( which is non existent these days as pilots start as cadets ) and he had a lot of luck on his side ( which he made the most of ).. As for the Monday Morning Quarter Backs whom tried to hang him Simon is wrong in his statement…Like Medicine Aviation is you are guilty unless proven innocent… The stakeholders ( company , Airbus / Boeing , Insurance Companies all play the blame game to keep their reputation untarnished..There is also 100s of Millions at stake so they all go hard…The easiest way out of this is to blame the Pilot and put it down to pilot error..That’s where the **** fight begins with the crew in jail…It’s then up to you to prove you did the correct procedures and back all the decisions versus options you had at the time..More importantly everything you did to achieve the end result was legal ( weather , Maintenance Log , Loadsheet , Rest , Private Life , etc etc)…The process is larger than climbing Mt Everest when things go horribly wrong…

Gary is quite correct, of course. My understanding is it was an accurate account of what happened.
The pilot is always to blame unless you can prove otherwise.

    Good movie.

In the RAAF, when a plane goes down the EE500 is the first thing grabbed and the ground crew are sweating their names aren't on the list for that flight.

It's normal procedure in the military for the planes maintenance log to be carried by another aircraft, is that the same for commercial ?

Of course, once the ground crew is cleared (and I've been up before the review board) then it is the pilot that has to be cleared but as an old saying goes "I've got a faster jet coming next week " :p
