yep, triple road train (petrol, diesel, and avgas) collided with a car - Barkly Highway closed in both directions according to tonight's news...dunno how many liters those things carry?
That's terrible must have happened around 0815 as we were passing abeam Mt ISA. Looked to be just outside of Cloncurry......Thought it was a road tanker as there was nothing else around and it was heavy black petroleum smoke.
Arrived at Wanaka - this site should have the best photos. Busy talking no time for photos! http://rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/25351/warbirds-over-wanaka-international-airshow?page=8#scrollTo=262935

Something we don’t see very often in SA - a nice roll cloud this morning over Spencer Gulf. I was a bit slow getting the phone out but it extended at least another 20 miles behind the wing in a dead straight line. It shows what was a pretty severe and sudden wind change which we had experienced fifteen minutes earlier taking off from Tumby Bay. We landed with a 25kt north-westerly then took off in the opposite direction 10 minutes later with a 25kt south / south-westerly. Moderate turbulence after takeoff until we’d climbed through the change, despite being a lovely clear day. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Cracking day Steve......It's not very often you see that phenomena these days......I've hung my boots up for the month on leave so it's nice to wake up at the same time every day and work on the property.......
Ah, nice one. Hopefully you get to drive those cars a bit too. I’ve got some leave coming up in May and June. Heading to Cairns / Brisbane. Then UK / Europe. Bugger the house! Lol.
Spits had a prop diameter of around 10'9''- 11 ft up to the Mk ix's. when they went to the griffon engines things changed altogether. Rotation changed to opposite direction, which pilots found un settling after you wind the rudder bias on pre- take off! Also they went to 5 blades to absorb the 36 litres and over 2000 Hp. The F4 corsairs had a massive 14 ft prop hence the gull wing to get the thing out of the way. Early Mustangs were powered by the Allison. good engine but nowhere as good as the Merlin.

I've been meaning to ask you fly boys if you ever do pre-flight walk arounds before you fly the planes ? We use to have a pilot that had a nervous tic and had to wear his helmet when doing the pre-flight because there are a lot of sharp edges on F-111s and he use to hurt himself so started wearing the helmet. Weird thing was that the second he was in the aircraft his head never moved involuntarily . Another pilot had a speech impediment but again, once in the cockpit his speech was perfect
I thought you soft airline Captains sent the FO out to do that (well, at least if it’s raining anyway). I do a reasonably thorough one at the start of every shift, plus a very brief wander around before each flight.
