Had a bit of a treat today. Landed at Mount Gambier to drop off a couple of patients and pick up another to take back to Adelaide. A fairly yawn-inducing trip normally but it was a lovely day today. Anyway, the ambos told me that the gentleman I was taking back used to be a pilot, so I went to the ambulance to say hi and have a chat. Turns out he was a WWII Spitfire pilot! His face lit up when I told him how it’s my favourite aircraft of all time and one day I’m going to go to England and do the endorsement etc. We stood next to the PC12 and chatted for about 20 minutes while they sorted out the other patients. He did most of his Spitfire flying in the Pacific, flying mostly Mk VCs, and then later on MK VIIIs and I think he said IXs as well. He said he preferred the Mk V overall and that is was such a lovely thing to fly. You just strap it on and it becomes part of you. If I could I would have stuck him in the co-pilot’s seat, but I couldn’t of course. What we did do was put him in the seat directly behind the cockpit divider so he could see most of what was going on. He was beaming for the whole flight and afterwards complimented me and shook my hand warmly. Made my day!
