I'm inclined to think that whole story is BS, invented after the fact, a bit like Enzo's cavallino myth.

Ferrucio has lots of money from his tractor business, observes that there is a market for exotic cars, so decides to get involved. Just a simple business decision, dressed up with drama in a typical Italian way.
