https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/139438/austin-kerbs-added-to-avoid-verstappen-pass-repeat Formula 1 has moved to prevent a repeat of Max Verstappen's corner-cutting controversy in last year's United States Grand Prix by installing new kerbs at the Austin track. Verstappen was furious at the end of last year's race when he was handed a five-second penalty - which cost him a podium finish - after he was ruled to have gained an advantage by cutting the track at Turns 16 and 17. The Dutchman had snatched third place on the road from Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap by diving inside the Ferrari driver at the double apex right-hander, but with all four wheels off the circuit he was deemed to have completed the pass illegally. Although there was controversy over the incident, which included Verstappen launching an attack on the stewards over why he had been penalised while others had got away with track limits abuses, the FIA has decided to take action for this year. The FIA has also added new kerbs at the exit of Turn 1 in a bid to deter drivers from running wide there. The new bumps are similar to those that have previously been used at Turns 11, 15 and 19. Ahead of this weekend's US GP, the FIA has confirmed that two major new kerbs have been fitted at the location. The new kerbs, which are two metres long, one metre wide and 50mm high, have been installed behind the apex kerbs at Turns 16 and 17.
Wonder if the new kerbs will stay in place once a few of the less accurate drivers bounce across them and hit something? Drivers should be capable of staying on track without putting kerbs in place, but at least I suppose it means we don’t have to worry about whether there is a penalty or not (as clearly some drivers will never get penalised and others would)
The FIA has given the all-clear to Mercedes' clever new wheel hub and rims, in the wake of a clarification request from Ferrari. https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-wheel-ferrari-probe-fia/3196635/ Sources have revealed that Ferrari approached the FIA asking questions about the rear wheel rim and hub design that its title rival had used in recent races. In particular, Ferrari wanted to know why Mercedes was able to run with a rim design that featured a collection of holes that appeared similar in many ways to a concept that Red Bull was banned from using at the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix. Back then, Red Bull was forced to make modifications to its front wheel hubs because holes that channelled air from the brake ducts to the outside of the wheel were ruled to be moveable aerodynamic devices.
Cheating again.... blind eye from the FIA, business as usual then...... wouldn’t want to have to penalise Mercedes and take away the titles, they might have to give the money back I suppose
I think Ferrari should just instigate 24/7 running at Fiorano or Mugello, The FIA have proven yet again to be next door to useless, there is no consistency in decision making, lose Ferrari and F1 would implode pretty quickly.
Absolutely..... if the FIA are going to turn a blind eye to Mercedes cheats, then we should get on with some too
