That 512M crate engine must be quite pricey... Great work! Please post some detailed photos when the restore is complete!
Coming together. Engine is back out for timing belts after mock-up in the chassis so I can modify left timing cover to provide alternator mount clearance with the dry sump tank. New rear grill in and new tail lights makes everything look fresh and correct. Ignore rear air box covers, they're not installed yet. Turns out the brackets that were replaced in the distant past had one cover a 1/2" further back than the other! Im correcting that now. I hear ya! Its killing me to see it every day! I want to rip mine apart and resto-mod it thanks to this car.
Paul, please, please resist that temptation at least until she is shipped back to my waiting garage!!
Replaced engine bay side panels with new ceramic coated ones a friend of mine makes, these were the roughest Ive seen so far! I had to trim the top lip off so they would fit the new upper bar that was installed when the wider rear wheels were put on. Its a subtle change. for the rivets you used again the original holes in the frame? how did you get the old ones out? or the rest of the old ones that they not fall into the square tube?
Engine back in to stay, started hooking up the mechanicals. Next will be the engine harness and ECU, wide band O2's, ignitor etc. Last pic is from below looking up to the alternator with clearance to the drysump tank and no sledge hammer required! you also will update/modify the brakes? even with the original power they are not very good what about my question before with the rivets?
With the turbos and quite a bit more power it was a blast to drive, just not very reliable. It was very fast but still quite easy to manage. I expect the n.a. motor set up will be more predictable and much more tame (although that might not be the exact word I am looking for
Using the muffler from the previous twin turbo application with inlets at the top added a challenge. I wanted symmetry with the collector pipes entering the muffler because you see them from the rear of the car so they play a role in the "look". Orange vertical mark on the left inner fender indicates the rear bumper edge that the pipe had to clear going up. So far so good. Ill post more pics when the system is off the car so I can weld it. Its not as tight as it looks and its mandrel bent 3" pipe supporting 2.5L per bank. Plenty big enough.
Interior back together. A lot less going on in the cabin. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Black anodized grill and a new a/c condenser I had made. Fog lights going in next. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
