New owner of a 2017 488. I've been away from the car for 2 weeks and hope the battery gives me no trouble when I return (dealer told me it would hold for a month). I don't have easy access to a plug from my parking space. Wondering if there is any benefit in purchasing a portable power bank (the kind Amazon, Home Depot, or Best Buy sells for $300-500), and using it as a stop gap maybe once a week to transfer charge from the portable power bank to the car. Any benefit? If the car battery is already dead, does the power bank revive it?
If it is already a dead battery, then you will need a pretty strong charger 10 amps at least to revive the battery in a reasonable time. Some modern chargers won't charge if they don't see enough voltage. The power pack probably won't last long enough to charge a dead battery. It may be enough to run a tender and top off a battery that is low from sitting. If the car starts, just go drive the h#ll out of it and enjoy it.
If I read your question right you’re wondering if you are safe to leave the your car parked for 2weeks w/o a tender? if the battery was in a healthy state - the answer is yes. My experience has been 3 weeks, of being Untended before the car goes into a low state of charge. That said it depends on the state of the battery when parked.
I think you have a good idea. My understanding is that batteries lose about 1% of their charge per day and if they get seriously low they are permanently damaged and will never be as good again. So yes, topping up the battery once a week is probably a good idea.
I use two power banks for my Portofino M — right now I live in an apartment building with no outlets. A 500wh bank lasts 48 hours, and my 1K bank almost 100 hours. This is after the car battery is fully charged — it runs down on some short drives and uses more power from the banks initially to get to 7 lights on the Ferrari trickle charger. Good luck with your choice!
