I'm thinking about buying a car in Melbourne, and I was wondering what methods you guys use to check up on a car's condition, accident history etc without having to go over there.

The car is at the Melbourne Automobile Company (www.melbourneauto.com.au)

    636 Mount Alexander Road
    Moonee Ponds
    VIC 3039

    Thanks.

You may want to start with an RACV inspection. Used it all the time and works well. Bought my last car from QLD and used RACQ - was also good.

    Blast!

I ring the place up, and they tell me they're in the middle of selling the car I want.

dare we ask what it is you were looking at?

i spoke to Les about that NSX today. it's currently in a showroom on Pulteney street and he looked at it for someone interstate. the low price reflects the cars condition - very rough.

    Thanks.

Melbourne Autos had a black '97 Volvo 850R manual 5sp that I was interested in.

Stock, 185kW (248hp), 350Nm. With an ECU upgrade and different exhaust I could get 225kW (300hp) out of it. :)

    [Confession] I've owned 2 850 T5 Wagons (and a V70 T5). I lusted after a pale yellow 850R too. The 850 Turbo (even the 175kw model) was as flyer.

I dont particularly see what would be wrong with buying the Jap import, theyre solid cars, and as long as it checks out here, it should be OK.

As for RAC inspections, i wouldnt be too sure. I sold 1 car and they came out and checked it, and didnt pick up any of the problems with it.

I also had one done on a car i brought, they said the tyres were all new, and it had a few stone chips, however the engine blew up only 5 days after i brought it.

and that Green NSX has been for sale for at least 6 months, i always keep an eye on NSX's but they still seem a little highly priced IMO.

As i said in a previous post to Admiral, i reckon the 850R would be a great round town daily plonker, there just dont seem to be many around.

yep just be wary, things don't often go wrong, but when they do they cost a bundle. some basic info on the $40k NSX here: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65518
i've only been in one, but that one has been driven pretty dam hard, and for $60-90k these cars are a bargain. it's 90% as nimble as the Elise, and got 90% of the oomph of a modern exotic. with a budget of say $80k i don't think i'd look any further than an early NSX.

I guess i just expect Jap cars to have depreciated a little more. The cost of cars as a whole in this country suck, because of this stupid luxury tax crap.

anyhoo, they would make a nice daily, but for my money i'd still rather a new WRX for 40k and save the extra over the NSX on a better weekend toy. Or if i wanted to show a little bit of class (because we know WRX owners have none cough Dingo Cough) theres a fair bit to choose from in new cars for less.

But yes if you want a good quality 2 seater sports car, theres little to rival it. I test drove an S2000 theyre nice, but also a little pricey IMO.

On the same note,my mate just bought a R33 Skyline from Perth, and got it trucked here last week, got VIP Inspections to organise a check over for him. The owner told him the car was immaculate, the VIP report said that it was immaculate,but.................they missed the rear inner edges of tyres were bald, the powersteering pump leaking oil everywhere, and it has a few scuff marks on the front and side of the car. So you never really trust them doin that work for you. I personally think,if you are lucky to have a mate that knows what hes doin to check the car out for you :)

or you get an inspection and then fly over to see it in the flesh.

I didnt with my Lotus as it was only a cheap car, but my next car will be a slightly bigger waste of money, so ill probably be a little more pedantic.

Yeah,he couldnt get any time off work anytime soon and the car was only $40K. The guy had alot of people chasing finance on the car, apparently,so my mate jumped on it. And the flight over to Perth return is around $1800. Thats what it cost to truck it here :) $1900. Seeing it in the flesh,is the way to go if possible alright.

yeah for a car of that price I wouldnt be too stressed about flying over, however being a GTR i would always tread carefully.

my lotus was more than that and i was happy to not see it in the flesh, but as the next car will be more like$150+ i may fly over

this time last year i flew half way across the country to check out a GT4: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=134773512#post134773512

to me the trip will always be worth it. hell, i didn't buy it, but for $300 bucks i got to get out of the house, go for a daytrip, see a city i've never seen, and drive a ferrari. now that i think of it, that's the best $300 bucks i ever spent. :p

$1800 from Mt.Isa to Perth? For a Skyline! Hell no! Why bother and he didnt. I wouldnt pay that to fly to Perth to begin with :p lol I flew to Sydney to check a 348 out, last June, stayed overnight and it cost $980 for the return plane trip, spur of the moment kinda thing,as was the $620 it cost me last September from here to Brisbane return, but that was not a wasted trip ;)
