First time poster, long time lurker My family is interested in purchasing a 308 in the near future. We have already begun looking both online and offline auto traders. After doing many searches through the archives, I've become somewhat aware of the problem areas on these cars. On a side note, as far as maintenance goes, my father and I are DIY-gurus. We've worked on anything from a Chevrolet 350, to a 4-cam, 32-valve 928 S4 engine. I'm curious to know where to find shop manuals for the 308 series cars. We are still debating on purchasing a carbuerated or fuel-injected 308 since California's smog laws are incredibly strict. On the other hand, we'd only have to wait a year or 2 for exemption if we purchase a 77 or 78! Anyways, a couple questions here for you 308 nuts: -Are there any other places to look for 308 ads besides Du Pont Registry, Auto Trader, Collector Car Trader, and Ferrariads.com? BTW, in case you're wondering about price range, we are looking for something under $35,000 in mechanically good shape and little to no cosmetic flaws (i.e. rock chips don't scare us) -What are some of your thoughts and impressions on the 308? We aren't jumping into this car for a power-craving, but to own a very iconic car that has a timeless lines and a great weekend cruiser with maybe a commute or 2 to work in. We like to drive our cars in the family. After having a 928 S4, we know that letting a car sit will result in oil leaks and doing more harm than good. -I'm aware of valve adjustments since this is a mechanical valvetrain. As far as parts for proper adjustments go, are they readily available, such as shims? Anyone written a DIY valve adjustment yet that I may take a gander at? Thanks for your thoughts, reads, and comments in advance. We are looking forward to a 308 adoption
FYI, the rolling exemption is no longer in effect, so '76 & forward will never be exempt. we can thank the 'govenator' for that.
Doh! I forgot about that SMG! Hey how many of you guys purchased your car from out of state and had it shipped over? From what I've seen in the traders, Ferraris appear to be cheaper outside of California. This good be to our advantage
Give this a try www.fantasyjunction.com or www.specialtysales.com To my personal opinion for performance I would choose 308 carbs. but for reliability go for 308 QV
oh for the record, I didn't mention bodystyle. We want a GTB or GTBi. Carbs are great and my father is an ace at webers and holleys!
Another quick question here: To do the routine timing belt and valve adjustment maintenance on these 308s, does it require engine removal, or can it be done still in the bay?
On the manuals, I purchased a copy of the shop manual from T. Rutlands for my Mondial last year. I would suggest that route. Thor www.JavelinArt.com
