Bonhams Goodwood Revival 17th September 2022

Bonhams return to Goodwood for their third annual sale there. Always a highlight on the Bonhams calendar, this year is no exception. The most expensive lot on offer is the Aston-Martin DB3 but its the Cooper Zerex special that interests most. Originally built as a standard T53P for Briggs Cunningham and raced by Walt Hansgen at the US GP in 1961 where he crashed. Roger Penske bought the crashed car and in a move that would be repeated many many times had a basically illegal motivation for the purchase. Lightweight spider coachwork was fitted to the repaired car and it was entered for USRRC sportscar competition where it totally dominated. Such was its speed and ability the US authorities outlawed centre seat sportscars and instead required all entries to have two seats for 1963.

Penske had the centre section of the chassis rebuilt with the straight top tubes replaced by curved ones that allowed two seats to fit and continued to race the Zerex special. Ultimately this change meant the car lost much of its structural rigidity but still continued to win and although it was sold to John Mecom, Penske still raced it widely and continued to win including the 1963 Guards Trophy. Bruce McLaren had considered building his own sportscar special and when the chance to buy the Zerex special (and a Olds V8) in early 1964 came along he snapped it up. McLaren raced the car in unchanged form a few times in the UK before requesting his team take a hacksaw to the chassis and scrapped the entire centre chassis. McLaren was new to the art of chassis design but knew he needed to fit the light but powerful Oldsmobile V8 and rebuilt the car to fit.

Despite winning the Mosport GP against strong opposition McLarens alterations hadn't helped add rigidity and the car ended up less than acceptable. Further wins at the Guards Trophy and TT followed but it was clear that the future for McLaren was the spec built M1 sportscar and the Zerex special was sold to Dave Morgan in the USA. He soon sold it on to Venezuela and the car remained there until being shipped to the UK in July 2022. The Zerex special was a significant car in Roger Penske, John Mecom and Bruce McLarens careers and as such is incredibly cool. Bonhams haven't given an estimate and the car requires a half million quid restoration but perhaps 2 mm, maybe even 3 mm isn't too much for it.

As noted earlier Bonhams are also offering one of the ten DB3s made in 1951/2 to compete in the World Sportscar championship. David Brown was advised to hire Robert von Eberhorst who was claimed to be an ex Auto-Union designer. Its unclear just how much of the Porsche developed rear engined car he ever designed and the DB3 was a overweight, underpowered and poorly braked car. A couple of race wins in the UK notwithstanding the great hope turned out to be anything but and the much improved DB3S soon replaced it. Extremely rare the estimate of 2.8 - 3.3 mm isn't crazy expensive considering it is a guaranteed entry at every concours and classic race meet.

Another star car is one of the four Sunbeam GP cars built for the 1922 French GP and a Porsche 904GTS that will need a huge restoration. A fantastic sale with many many exciting cars on offer.

Penske sold it to McLaren who sold it to Dave Morgan who sold it to the first of I believe two unnamed Venezuelan owners. Essentially none of Penskes modifications remained after McLaren hacked it about and indeed only parts of the front and rear of the original Cooper remain today. Such is the way of things!

 

And he is wealthy enough to preserve this car as it last raced and have a replica of the original Zerex Special built to race anywhere, anytime.
