The Cunningham Royale was 41141 The Kellner Coupe' thought to be Ettore's personal car. Apparently it did go to Japan in 87
Thanks. Obviously my source is not quite current. BTW they say that Ettore's car had neither speedometer nor fuel gauge.
Here! in the rain even... they fired it right up later in the show, and she still purs Image Unavailable, Please Login
Impressions. When I first viewed this car, I felt the tires were 8 feet tall. Not quite, but really impressive.
There is a story that the Domino's Pizza founder delivered a pizza in his Royale ...30 minutes or less, annoy the noid
The story goes that he delivered a Pizza in every car he owned... including the Royale. My family has been long time friends with his ... I don't know if I'd say assistant, but .... something to that nature when he ran Dominoes... Marlene E.
There is an amazing replica of chassis number 41.110 at The Donington Grand Prix Collection. It is certainly a very imposing car!
I defer to your personal knowledge. Kind of cool. A Stanley might be helpful in keeping the pies warm.
Are you sure? It is shown as being owned by VW. Do you have some sale information? I doubt if VW owned the car, they would sell it. All the info available says Kellner is owned by VW. What info do you have? Every search I do shows VW owning the Kellner. And which T57SC Atlantic? The one you mentioned, 57453, was supposedly wrecked? Thanks.
The Kellner coach #41141 was never sold to Volkswagen, no more at Ferdinand Piech as can be read several times. It was sold to a Spanish collector through Lukas Hüni in January 2002. This Spanish collector is also the owner of the Bugatti Atlantic #57473 replica or reconstruction (to everyone's point of view we may have), recently restored and displayed at Pebble Beach.
More details on the Bugatti Atlantic #57473 Replica, on these pages (see the comments) : http://www.velocetoday.com/archives/10032#more-10032 http://www.paulrussell.com/articles/RestoringHistory.pdf
When Miles Collier bought Briggs Cunningham's collection, he sold off the Kellner. Auctioneer IIRC was Brooks with an accompanying story in Classic and Sportscar where Mick Walsh got to drive it in California before it sold.
Jaap Horst's Bugatti page http://bugattipage.com/#News had a news item on May 15, 2010 about the existence of a seventh Royale. Not to confused with the Schlumpf chassis built into the Esders roadster (or Tom Wheatcroft's replica). The story goes that the prototype was wrecked and then always assumed to have been repaired to make the first (41 100) of six Royales. According to the news story, the prototype chassis wasn't rebuilt so the six cars we know of were all 'production' chassis. Apparently Harrah had the prototype chassis and sold it to an American collector in the 1960s who kept it for 40 years. He recently sold it to a new owner who intends to build a body for it. Should be an interesting story to follow.. Best, Dave
Dave, I understood that the prototype had a different wheelbase from the subsequent cars. I'm away from my source material at the moment but as I remember one of the known cars (Harrah's Coupe Napolean?) had the prototype's wheelbase. How do this jive with the thought that the chassis you mention is the lost proto? Thanks for the follow-up info on the Kellner. David
Hi David, Just coincidence. We know that Bugatti built six completed cars and that the Esders was finished (in the 90's IIRC) on the seventh unfinished chassis. This article (check the link when you get time) says that the prototype chassis, after being wrecked, didn't become 41 100- so therefore, 8 chassis built by Bugatti, not 7. It was put aside and later acquired by Bill Harrah. The fact that he may have had two chassis of non-standard wheelbase is just that- coincidence. It's helpful to remember that he had EVERYTHING at the time- 3000 cars.. the 2nd ex-Griff Borgeson 91 FD Miller Packard Cable Special (Leon Duray car, now in Smithsonian via Bob Rubin).. everything. Best, Dave
Context made it likely but when it comes to Bugs you never know? A couple of our Brit cousins have cars at Lime Rock this year. Interesting to see some "new" cars. David
