You will pay the sales tax in the state you register in. So unless you have one of those business LLCs set up in Montana, pretty sure there is no way avoiding the tax man.

If the car is shipped from the Cali dealer across state lines to AZ you do not pay Cali tax. You can not drive the car out of the lot. You will then register in az and pay tax accordingly. I just did this with a car I shipped from Wisconsin.

If registered in AZ and the title and transaction is from a private owner, there’s virtually no tax. If dealer transaction, there will be tax if registered in AZ.

Yup. I purchased my 360 from a seller in Sacramento last December and registered it here in Maricopa County. I paid $93 all in for the registration. Another cool thing in AZ is that if you buy a car for $50K and your trade-in is $25K, you are only taxed on $25K unlike in Cali for example where you pay tax on $50K.

Last version of the law I was aware of you could buy it but not take possession in California. The law has been ignored but it was the law. If caught California franchise tax board is known to not be forgiving.

100% correct...I experienced this when purchasing a late model enclosed trailer from a private owner in TX and registered in AZ..I was not that lucky when I purchased my F430 from a local retailer...hard pill to swallow but its better then having it bite you in the butt later.
