I've just bought a set of the replica Campagnolo wheels in 14" size from Superformance and can confirm they do have Campagnolo cast onto them. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Iain, Thanks for the pictures. Did they come with Campagnolo center caps, or did you have to buy those separately? Also, did the caps have the 'snap rings' with them? 'looking forward to seeing them mounted up. Will you be getting XWXs, or perhaps the Vredestein Sprint Classics? Both are available from Longstone. Cheers, Coop
Coop, They don't come with centre caps but you can order them from Superformance as well. I've not decided yet whether I'm going with the Campagnolo branded centres or the yellow Dino variety. I've ordered the blank mounting centre caps and rings from Dino Parts along with a set of the Dino centre caps to put on them plus a set of the Campagnolo centre caps from Superformance. I'll try both and see which look I prefer. I've already got a set of new Michelin XWXs waiting to go on to the rims but the car goes into the paintshop on Monday 8th November so I guess it'll be at least 3 weeks before the wheels can go on the car. I'll keep the current Cromodora wheels and look for someone capable of refurb'ing magnesium so that I can put the car back to "original" should I want in the future.
Because the original bolts for the Campagnolo rims have a different part number as the bolts for Cromodora rims, I thought it makes sence to measure both. The result is: Campagnolo bolts are a bit shorter. Campagnolo bolts: front: 7,3 cm rear: 6,3 cm Cromodora bolts: front: 7,6 cm rear: 6,7 cm regards Matthias
Thanks, Matthias. Actually, you can rest assured that I am not (nor is my friend) running around with front lugs that are too short. I pulled 'em & realized that they are longer than the rears. Whew! That's a considerable difference in length in your Campagnolo-Cromodora comparison. You said that you are running the Campy wheel with the longer (front & rear) Cromodora bolts? I trust that you have not had intereference problems at either end? Thanks for taking the time to measure & report your findings. Cheers, Coop
Coop I tried the the Campagnolo wheel with the longer (front & rear) Cromodora bolts and no problems. The other way around, bolts are a bid too short, would be slightly more problematic.. But having said that, the overal differences in lengh is small, so not a big issue I guess. Ferrari recommended the Campagnolo bolts not to use for Cromodora... Regards Matthias
Whew. You lucked out there. However, it can make a difference in some instances. My daughter's aftermarket wheels on her Benz were mounted with stock length bolts and the rims were slightly thinner than the stock ones. The lugs turned out to be only 3mm too long but they just clipped something (perhaps the upright?) behind the rotor and stub axle flange on the rear. I heard it immediately and they took care of it. Furio, over in the 308/328/Mondial section, had a similar problem when mounting his 'Superformance' 16" wheels with the too long stock bolts. They were actually long enough to prevent the rear wheels from turning! Oopser. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=301638 The factory may have anticipated the potential for interference, so made that recommendation. Or not. Am I giving them too much credit? At any rate, thanks for forging the way for the rest of us to follow. Cheers, Coop
Scott, I posted pictures of the repainted car - 03342 - back in early 2011. Since having that work done I've bought and restored 04054 and found a great body restoration specialist in the process who knows the 246 inside out. He is now redoing the body on 03342 for me as there were elements on it that I wasn't happy with and will be changing it back from red into it's original Bianco Polo Park. All of the body shaping has been completed and the car should be going into primer this week. I took the opportunity to retrim the interior in the correct original heat stitched Skai vinyl that was supplied by Luppi and have the dash recovered for a second time but using Henk's Mousehair material this time around. I also had a new set of carpets made in black using Henk's carpet. The original Cromodora wheels have been refurbished and will go back onto the car when the paintwork is complete. I hope to visit the shop later this week and will take pics of the progress.
Lets all stand back and actually look at these gold stickers on the wheels. They look horrible. They look like a delivery sticker that was intended to be taken off otherwise they would have been placed more accurately and be made of a more durable material. The Campagnolo rims are very attractive and don't need the sticker. Can you really image that the Italian who designed the rims would allow/want a dodgy GOLD stcker slapped on his work? Get them off and marvel at the purity of the bare rims.
